Makinoto Pass Observatory – When a Scenic Stop Turns Into a Solo Adventure 🌼
I went to Makinoto Pass on a cloudy weekend, just planning to check out the observatory — no hiking gear, no expectations. But when I arrived, the visitor center parking was full, so I parked about 1 km away and walked in, already feeling like the journey had begun.
The observatory itself offers sweeping views of the rugged Aso-Kuju landscape, even with the clouds hanging low. I noticed people heading up the mountain trail and, caught in the moment, I thought — why not? I joined the hike solo and unplanned, just following the winding path surrounded not by tall trees, but by low shrubs and blooming mountain flowers, swaying gently in the cool breeze.
I made it about halfway up before turning back — the trail started getting steeper and I wasn’t equipped for a full-on climb. Still, it was the kind of spontaneous detour that makes a trip memorable. Quiet trails, open skies, and a little bit of adventure I didn’t see coming.
