「立命館」の由来は、『孟子』盡心章句（じんしんしょうく）にある「殀寿貳（ようじゅたが）わず、身を修めて以て之を俟（ま）つは、命を立つる所以（ゆえん）なり」（人間の寿命は天命によって決められており、修養に努めてその天命を待つのが人間の本分である）から採られた。

建学の精神 編集 建学の精神は「自由と清新」である。教学理念は「平和と民主主義」である

学風および特色

末川博記念碑（衣笠キャンパス） 末川博 名誉総長のことば「未来を信じ 未来に生きる」が刻まれる記念碑。末川記念会館前の木立に立つ。 第二次世界大戦前から戦中に掛けて、立命館大学は世相を反映して国家主義的傾向が強まっていった

一方で滝川事件（立命館大学では「京大事件」と呼称）の際には、同事件に連座して京都帝国大学を退官した教員を受け入れていた。終戦直後、同事件に連座した、京都大学法学部教授の末川博を総長へ招聘した。その末川を中心に大学の改革へ乗り出す。憲法と教育基本法を尊重して「平和と民主主義」を守ろうという末川の思想が中心となって、立命館大学は「民主的な学園運営」「自主的学習の尊重」の2本柱によって構成され、以下に記載する取り組みが現在の立命館大学に至るまで実施され続けている。末川が立命館大学に与えた影響は極めて大きく...
