It's a beautiful day trip from Tokyo Shinjuku station, and we'll worth the visit especially during koyo season. Enjoy Japan's steepest cable car ride (a slope of 31 degrees and some dust at some point towards the top).
Be prepared for long waits if visiting during the weekend in season (fall foliage for example). It's a popular destination amongst tourists, foreigners and locals alike.
However, the site is well prepared and there's still tons to enjoy, walking up to the summit, enjoying the succession of temples and stalls and commerces of all sorts.
Truly a traditional japanese experience of tradition and efficiency, in nature.
p.s. Do take route number 4 coming down if you are in intermediate trekking shape, it's a bit steep at times, but shady...
