Canyons Snowsports School Yuzawa — Local services in Yuzawa

I was very fortunate to have my 1-1 full day lesson with Head Instructor Dennis Asplund again this season (Jan 2025).

Previously I trained half day back in Jan 2024 at Gala Yuzawa with him and I learned to ride edge to edge on my board.

This time round, I consider myself now an intermediate rider and wanted to learn how to carve.

Instead of Gala again, Dennis and his colleagues (Matt and Hosay I think) drove me from my resort at Iwappara to Ishiuchi which is perfect for the training I need.

Full day sessions are better than half days, as it was less intense and I was able to pace myself with Dennis’s help.

As usual, Dennis gave very clear and simple instructions for me to follow and demonstrated how I should start to peddle and approach my carvings.

I liked that he was able to help me push my boundaries in a very safe and careful manner. He constantly helped me to correct my posture as well.

Beyond that, his easy, patient and very encouraging personality really made my experience again a very good one.

I also followed him the next day back to Ishiuchi again to observe how he was training my friend, who was snow boarding for the 1st time.

My friend was able to do things I could only do previously, after 2-3 lessons, in just 1 lesson.

Hence, I have decided not to be selfish anymore, and highly recommend Dennis for all levels of riders who would like to enjoy their precious time riding in Japan.

As an additional bonus, Dennis is great with kids too!

We had the absolute pleasure of taking private ski lessons with Diego from Canyons Ski School at Hodaigi Ski Resort. It was such an unforgettable experience! Over two full days, my 6yo daughter and I made incredible progress thanks to his expertise and teaching skills. Was initially trying to join/look for a Group Snowboard lesson but ended up booking a private one. Felt like I HIT THE JACKPOT getting Nini as our instructor! She was clear and very knowledgeable. A perfect balance of professional and FUN! We learned a whole lot and had a blast. The 2hr lesson felt so short! I’d definitely recommend her as well as Canyon School if the caliber of instructors are like her.

But, on another note, sadly I would say that the booking and reception experience could be BETTER. I felt rushed and wasn’t given the best advice given I ended up booking a lesson for 2 people. I felt that the experience with the lady (didn’t get her name) at the reception needs improvement. She got my credit card, didn’t show me the amount, like discussed before charging it, and was not the most accommodating given there was NO ONE else in line. There was no need to RUSH us, I feel.

So, just a suggestion, don’t get rushed into anything. Weigh your options for classes/private or what you want. BUT as for the Instructor and Lesson, which is what you are paying for, TOTALLY WORTH IT! Thanks again Nini! 😊
