SmartCity — Local services in Kalkara

What an absolute disgrace, walked over and hour to get there, it's awful. It's like a ghost town and the fountain in the centre doesn't work anymore and has been left to ruin. The empty buildings aren't finished, it's like they said one day, right lads let's go, no more. Malta you should be ashamed, but yet you keep letting people invest and build elsewhere. I cannot count the number of abandoned projects, derelict buildings and empty hotels there are that many around the island. The place where we are staying has construction started on top of it. Regulations are not being followed and as for the build quality I don't know where to start. Everywhere you go there is scaffolding, holes being dug, buildings in disarray, cranes, heavy machinery and top top it off there's dog mess everywhere you go. You know who you are not cleaning up after your dogs! Tbh, all of Malta is like a building site, unfinished, unkept and a disgrace. What used to be a lovely island is nothing more than an advert for how shocking the government and infrastructure is here. Don't let me tell you about the other issues here. SmartCity in Kalkara is one of those places I never get tired of visiting! 🌊 Living nearby, I can say it’s such a great spot to unwind and enjoy the beautiful sea views. As shown in the video uploaded, the location right by the water makes every walk along the promenade feel refreshing and calming.

There are some lovely restaurants where you can grab a bite, and with the new Shoreline Mall, it’s become even better for a bit of shopping. The big lightshow fountain is always a highlight—especially in the evenings when it lights up with colors and music. It’s such a nice atmosphere for families, couples, or even just meeting up with friends.

What I love most are the sitting areas along the promenade—you can just relax, chat, and take in the sea breeze. 🌅 SmartCity really has that mix of modern vibes and natural beauty, and it’s definitely a place I’d recommend to anyone wanting to spend a chilled...

I travelled from the UK to Malta staying near Valetta. My visit happened in May 2024. The centre was extremely quite and many units remained empty. Development also appeared to be happening behind the central area. I have to assume the site is still in development.

I decided to walk. The walk was a hour each way. The scenery on the walk down the coast and across the Ports is very nice. I actually stopped and snorkeling along the way.

I wouldn't plan to just visit this centre as a main attraction, but if you are in the area or passing you can stop for the fountain show...
