Nagarkot is a popular place to go for sunrise. On a clear day, it is supposed to be amazing, with potential views of Everest. However, if coming from Kathmandu, you have to leave soooo early and no guarantee of view.||We opted to spend the night. I had my eye on this place and was surprised to learn it is the sister hotel of our "home" in Kathmandu, the Hotel Vajra! They have about 10-15 rooms in two long buildings with views over the valley, plus a main building with reception, a fireplace lounge and dining tables. Because it is somewhat remote, dinner is included. The setting is a fun change from the other things we had done. ||We arrived in mid-afternoon, checked into our spacious room and then read on our balcony until the sun was low enough that the January cold chased us indoors to the main building. We had dinner and then were escorted back to our room where the hotel helper built a large fire in our wood stove. (Note, stack up on firewood from the side of the building in case you wake up in the middle of the night!) As I have noted elsewhere, Nepali buildings generally don't have central heating but this was definitely our coldest night - we wore hats and fleece to bed and stuffed our next day's clothes under the covers just like we do when camping.||In the morning, we were socked in :( but I located where Everest should be and it's likely cloud cover. We briefly considered hiking to another lookout spot (note: they lock the gates at night so check to see what time they will be opened) but decided it was too much effort (had to descend a lot before hiking up again). We wandered the grounds, including the little stupa at the top, and had breakfast before out car picked us up at 9:30AM for a full day of sight-seeing back to Kathmandu (Chang Narayan Temple, the Buddha Stupa and the Pashupatinath ghats.||Overall uneventful but a nice counterbalance to our other activities and I'm...
Read moreOn one corner of nagarkot on the road that goes to saankhu lies nagarkot farmhouse. Its a good place if you are looking for a weekend getaway from Kathmandu. They have 14 rooms- a few with attached bathrooms and others with shared. The rooms feel like you are back in time in nepal or up in the mountains. They are basic but have a lot of Tibetan touches. Also for the winter each room has the wooden heaters like in the mountains. The place is surrounded by nature and seems quiet and peaceful. There is also a small gumba inside the property. The dining room also had a warm and cosy vibe. The food wasn't good- we had dinner and breakfast both if which were dissapointing. There was no hot water in the shower. What ruined the charm of the place more for us was there was a big group of local men from Kathmandu who decided to party, play music and the cajon till 2.00 am in the morning and the management didnt put that to a stop and so we along with another guest couldnt sleep. Since the place is overall so quiet the noise was disturbing and ruined the ambience of the...
Read moreNagarkot Farmhouse is a hidden gem amongst the hills of Nagarkot. Don't let the name 'farmhouse' put you off - there's nothing farmhouse related about this place. I didn't even see a chicken, but I mean that in a good way. This place is pretty snazzy. You may be thinking the worst when driving down the "road" to the entrance, as its mainly a thin trail of rocks on the ground - but fear not! Once you squeeze through the tiny entrance gate you will be captured by Nagarkot Farmhouses true beauty. The rooms are nice, bathrooms have toilet paper which is always a plus in Nepal if you want my personal opinion. Beds are comfy, and the room generally stays quite warm even when its bloody freezing outside. Rooms do come with a fireplace if you're into that kind of thing but it's probably not necessary. Dining room looks downward over the Nagarkot hills and breakfast and dinner is pretty delicious. Place is quite modern. But by that I mean, you know, modern for a place in the middle of nowhere. It's clean and staff are friendly. Try your luck here, I think it will...
