Waitemata Harbour and the associated Hauraki Hulf is superb and the Jewel in the Crown of Auckland City. It provides an extended sheltered area for recreational boating, sight seeing, fishing, and other water based activity. It contains many islands which can be visited including Waiheke, Rangitoto, and further out Great Barrier Island, all of which are very well worth visiting.
The water is relatively clean and there are a large number of beaches excellent for swimming. For visitors to Auckland a boat trip on the harbour is a must. Many such trips are available; check out tourist info. Recommended for a start, is a day trip to Rangitoto Island where you can walk up the mountain for a magnificent view of the city, have a picnic lunch and a swim before catching the ferry back...
