We made a morning stop by the Springfield Cafe during our drive from Aurthur's Pass to Christchurch and found their coffee & pies to be pretty good. This place seems to get slammed on TripAdvisor regularly by other reviewers. To be fair, we didn't encounter any of the problems regularly mentioned about this small town cafe. Service was fine during our visit. Long Black coffees tasted bold and good. Pies were pretty good. Our Peppered Steak pie was nice. Crust was flaky and the filling was a goo mix of peppered beef and gravy. We really liked the steak, mushroom and blue cheese pie. Again, good crust and a nice filling, capped with the stronger blue cheese. In the end, this was a good morning stop for coffee and pies, nothing more nothing less.

If you're looking to rent a crash pad for Castle Hill & Flock Hill this is the place. $20 deposit, $20 for first day and $10 for every dsy after. The food was fine and the lady at the register was nice, never saw the owners..the other reviews don't make it sound like it would be enjoyable.

Paramos a comer.

Kia Ora Whanuk,

I went 2 dis place bak in March and da pies were off da chain. Straight up g the pies were good as ae no wunder dey are the award winners.

I saw on da wall dat there was a certifacate for winning the world pie makin champonships.

I reckon dat they should make a KFC, hangi or boil up pie. My uncle Rangi knowz how 2 make da mean as boil up pies he reckons u just make a boilup and then put it ins the pastry but u dont put in any of da water cuz it will make da pastrie soggie.

Straight up thou whanuk they mean as and they well priced to if you are on da benefit. I only get $205 bucks a week so I dont have a whole lot of cizzash to throw at the munchies but this place is straight up worth it ae. It would be nice if they did like specols on tuez, wedz and thurzdayz for the peoples on the dole like show ur community service card and get a free masterfoodz tomato sauce and a can of golden circle fizzy.

Da owner is a bit of a skuxxx too and did i forget to tell u dat she makez da meanest pies!

Str8 up ill be goin back 2 this place when i go back 2 da souf iland as itz da meanest eva place 2 get u and da...

Super friendly staff who make the best pies in New Zealand. I don't think I have met a nicer couple than Donald and Karyn. They really are two amazing people and I am nominating them in the New Zealand Hospitality Awards.

I have been visiting the Springfield Store and Cafe since 2010 and they just keep getting better. The pies are so good that in my will I have requested when I die, a Springfield Angus Steak and Blue Cheese pie be placed into my casket along with a bottle of Chi Mineral Water.

You cannot find a better place for pies in New Zealand - They are award winners after all.

Please pay no attention to these negative reviews. Donald is such a nice man, he would probably give you a hand shandy if you asked for one. Karyn on the other hand is an attractive elderly woman who holds high standards in her busy little kitchen.

Thanks for being part of our lives Karyn and Don, you are appreciated.

On behalf of the Billington Family...

In March this year my husband and I called in for a big breakfast which we had had before finding it more than enough for the both of us. So this time we decided to order one meal and share it. The meal was not nearly as big as the previous one, or as tasty. What left us with a sour taste in our mouths was when the owner (man) bought us the jug of hot water we requested, he looked at the plate, looked at us with a smirk and said "cheapskates" in a really rude way. We vowed NEVER TO GO BACK THERE AND TO WARN OTHERS ABOUT THE SERVICE OR LACK OF. We were not surprised to read on FB that another couple had an experience with the owners rudeness and caught it on video. Go to the Springfield Cafe FB page to get a link to the video. You will be left...
