This is a wonderful hike! I was lucky enough to hike this three times while I lived in New Zealand for a year. The drive there from Auckland takes around 45 mins and the parking is not easy on a summer day so please take this into account.
The hike to the falls from the trail head isn't far but at the moment I cannot remember how far. No more than a couple miles. There is also a station that requires you to spray your shoes before the hike and this is very common in New Zealand.
The Kite Kite falls are gorgeous but the water is cold even in the summer so take this into mind. I loved every min of this hike and look forward to doing it again when I visit...

It was a lovely bush walk to the pools - with LOTS OF STAIRS. We saw multiple families carrying strollers up the stairs which looked like incredibly hard work. Track is narrow in some parts too - mostly gravel.
The top pools were a bit quieter and a bit of a hike to get too. Water is cold but refreshing. Rocks aren’t slippery and the swimming is good. The bottom pool is a lot busier but swimming is still great!
