We had an incredible experience with our 8 day trek in the Cordillera Huayhuash through Rocío’s agency in Huaraz. Rocío helped provide information on the trek’s logistics over WhatsApp and was super helpful in answering questions we had before heading to Perú in July. She was extremely helpful in clearing up any uncertainties we had and made us confident to submit our payment from the United States ahead of time. Our guide for this trip was Rocío’s sister Sonia who was born and raised in Llamác and has lived in areas along the circuit such as Llamác and Huayllapa for most of her life. Sonia was extremely friendly, warm, understanding, and knowledgeable throughout our trip. During the trek Sonia taught us the names of each peak and mountain pass on the circuit as well as familiarized us the meaning of each name in Quechua. The scenery is incredibly beautiful featuring stunning views of Andean pastures, glaciers, 20,000 ft peaks, and abundant wildlife such as cows, horses, donkeys, and condors. The tent provided was of very high quality, and we were never cold at night. The food was also so so good. We ate a variety of Peruvian soups and dishes with locally sourced vegetables and meats throughout the trek. Some standouts were the lomo, fried rice with chicken, quinoa soup, and pan fried trout that was caught the same day in one of the glacial streams! Pictured is our favorite lunch from the trip which was hard boiled eggs with potatoes and beat salad. Sonia was extremely caring throughout the trek and would also suggest certain teas, foods, and techniques to help us cope with any altitude and stomach problems we experienced throughout the trek. Not only was the hiking experience with her great but we also learned so much about the history, wildlife, and natural landscape of Huayhuash from Sonia. In addition to this, Rocío provided us accommodation after our trek when the hotel we had booked online fell through. Amazing group of people and highly recommend booking...
Read moreHuayhuash Trek Peru did a great job. Rocio and her family welcomed us warmly, and they provided us with an unforgettable experience. We did the 12 days' trek in June 2023 and we stayed at the Hostel of Rocio before and after the trek. For acclimatisation, Rocio recommended us suitable day hikes and helped us with planning. For the 12 days' hike we have requested non-meat food and our cook prepared us breakfast, lunch and dinner without meat. You have also special requests? Go and ask them. They, for sure, will find a solution! We never have been hungry. The food provided was sufficient. We never had problems with our stomachs. Maybe because we were super careful with the water (we boiled it and/or filtered it). Mules carried most of our equipment and luggage. At some camping sites, we have seen guides from other agencies treating their animals not well. Fortunately, our guide was good to his mules. It was not raining much; just a few hours in the 12 days. During the day, when the clouds did not cover the sun, it was very hot, and we had to wear a hat and sunglasses. Sunscreen is mandatory at such heights. On cloudy days and when the wind was blowing, it got chilly. In the night, the temperatures have fallen below 0 degrees. We are not sure about the absolute temperature, but we assumed something like -4°C to -8°C. In the morning, our tent was always frozen. The equipment provided by Huayhuash Trek Peru was in a good shape and quality. If we ever go for the Huayhuash Trek again, we will do it with Rocio and her family.
EDIT: Once we saw tourists bathing naked in the river. We were later told by Peruvian that locals do not...
Read moreI highly recommend Rocío and her family business for anyone who wants to have an excellent time on the Huayhuash Trek. I did an 8 day tour in early October and was very impressed with the staff and the organisation of the tour. The food was great and there was lots of it (including for a vegetarian), all equipment provided is good quality and appropriate for the conditions, Rocío's communication before and throughout was great. There was an emergency horse available at all times, and when I felt ill Rocío checked in on my condition regularly which made me feel safe on the trek. I thought the price was competitive, especially given the high quality of service that was provided. The best part is that Rocío, her family and the other crew are all lovely people who create a very warm, fun and caring environment the whole time, and have a strong connection to the lands we walk through on the tour which really helped to create a fantastic experience. Thanks Huayhuash...
