Situated in the Cordilleras of Luzon Island in the Philippines are the Banaue Rice Terraces at an elevation of approximatley 5,000 feet above sea level. The lfugao people have maintained this incredible farming technique for over 2000 years. Mountain sides and hills carved out by hand to build terraced fields combined with a rainforest fed irrigation system is an astonishing demonstration of engineering mastery and environmental sustainability. Many areas of the rice terraces have been declared a World Heritage Site under UNESCO. Unfortunately, some terrace locations have not been maintained due to a dwindling labour force and are slipping into decay. The rice terraces are a real marvel to be cherished, and I hope that the Government of the Philippines will intervene to preserve and maintain these lands.
