Suwon is founded by King Jeongjo. Although the area used to be called Hwasung (part of current Hwasung), the King made a citadel, small palace, and made several reservoir (lakes) and named the area Suwon. It means source of water. The name is a misnomer because Suwon originally lacked water. This reservoir, which is named ilwol (il means sun and wol means moon), is also one of the reservoirs that King Jeongjo made. The chinese characters “sun(il)” and “moon(wol)” are royal characters, they are forbidden to be used by ordinary people. Hence ilwol is regally name. ilwol reservoir is now situated at the southern foot of Sungkyunkwan University.
