€40 for one person for one day (not including the terrace houses or interpretive experience) is too much. Comparison truly is the thief of joy, but these prices are unlike similarly-classed sites in dozens of other counties around the world. Certainly the argument can be made that if one has money to travel, one has money to pay extra, and I understand charging less for locals, but the difference is unreasonable and the price is exorbitant. Recognized cultural heritage treasures such as Ephesus have the power to both unify and edify; to price them at such prohibitively high rates is a scandal...

The ticket price for October 2023 is 700 lira per adult! In my entire trip this was the most expensive ticket! Be sure to bring cash liras with you! They only accept lira (no euros or dollars)! There is nowhere to change money here. There was only one ATM and it was broken! Yes, I made a mistake and brought cash euros with me. I was able to exchange money in a restaurant, but I was very lucky, as only one place out of all agreed to exchange euros into liras (at an unfavourable exchange rate, of course!), the other...

Doch am Ticketschalter kam es zu einer völlig unverständlichen Situation: Man erklärte mir, mein Ausweis würde nächstes Jahr nicht mehr akzeptiert. Darf ich fragen, auf welcher Grundlage? Noch schlimmer und völlig unangebracht sind die Verkaufsstände rund um die Ausgrabungsstätte. Man hat hier eine der best erhaltenen antiken Stätten der Welt, öffnet sie der ganzen Menschheit – und setzt dann Bauern hin, die unfreundlich auftreten, teils sogar beleidigend werden. Die angebotene Ware hat keinen Wert, es ist reine Touristenfalle. Und doch darf an einem der bedeutendsten Weltwunder ein Basar mit billigsten Gegenständen stehen. Das ist einfach nur traurig und zerstört den gesamten Eindruck.

Diese nutzlosen Läden gehören dort entfernt – sie ruinieren die Würde und Einzigartigkeit...
