Walked from Consett to High Hamsterley couple of parking places along the way at Shotley Bridge and Ebchester. Lovely walk along the old railway path through the countryside and a variety of woods. Very clean, plenty of benches to rest and suitable for all abilities. The path is hard standing, making it suitable for wheelchair users as well. Continued the walk from Hamsterley to Rowlands Gill and would say this part is a lovely walk through several woodland areas and across a couple of viaducts, with great views. Plenty of railway history to see. The last part of the walk takes you from Rowlands Gill through to Derwent Park and towards Swalwell. Again, plenty to see and explore, especially the wildlife, including deer and red kites.

A truly refreshing experience! Derwent Walk offers a perfect escape into nature — walking through dense woodlands, crossing charming bridges, and strolling alongside the tranquil riverbank was pure joy. The trail is well-maintained and peaceful, ideal for both casual walkers and nature lovers. Birds chirping, gentle breeze, and the sound of flowing water make it a calming retreat just outside the city. Highly recommended if you’re looking to unwind and reconnect with nature.

The Derwent Walk is mine and my daughter's go-to place when we want a stretch of legs together. It is so easy to access with its many car parks if you need to drive there, and it is just beautiful and peaceful. There are many interesting birds to be spotted along the way, and bridges too. It does get a little busy at times with walkers and cyclists at weekends, in the summer, when the sun in out, but only occasionally. It is mostly quiet...
