I have few complaints about the gym, though a few weeks ago I had to point out that at least half of the static cycles with entertainment screens had faults. The manager's excuse on the day was that no-one had reported them, but as I said at the time, it takes five minutes to check. The pool and changing facilities are excellent, as are the steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. However, there seems to be little supervision of who goes into the changing rooms and several times I have come out of the shower block to find 7-10 year-old girls in the men's changing room, clearly having been taken in by their Fathers. This is completely unacceptable. There are family changing facilities available, although the signs for them are small, and easily missed. There needs to be quite clear indication that those with children should not use the men's facilities.
Now to the restaurant – Sweet waltzing Jesus, the restaurant. The service has never been the fastest, as despite it being quite a big place, there are only two tills, and there are rarely enough staff on to operate both, so there are always queues. But there is this peculiar arrangement whereby when someone orders drinks, the person on the till, then has to go to get them, rather than having someone dedicated to that role. It's not a very efficient way of working.
Today, I queued patiently to order two drinks and two lunches. The senior of the two ladies on duty, was busy complaining about something to another member of staff, which necessitated her ignoring the waiting customers, so the younger girl served. Perhaps she was new to the job, but she had the attention-span of a goldfish. I ordered a tuna salad, and poached eggs on toast, with smashed avocados, and two pints of apple-juice. I had to confirm the poached egg order because all memory of it seemed to be erased after ten seconds. I paid and followed her down the bar to get the drinks. She asked if I wanted ice, and I said 'a little', which she began to put into a half-pint glass. I reminded her that I had ordered pints. She apologised and began filling the first pint glass with orange-juice. I stopped her again, and reminded her that I had ordered apple juice. I took the drinks, and the table number before I taxed her further.
Quick as a flash – in thirty minutes, the meal arrived. The eggs were, at best, lukewarm and the yolks had set, so they had obviously been standing around for a while, as had the unsightly smear of avocado on the toast, as it had begun to show the brown discolouration of something that has been hanging around rather too long. The tuna salad I had ordered, had during the wait, spontaneously evolved into chicken (something I don't normally eat). It was delivered by, what a surprise, one of the ladies who were also working the tills, so it was no great mystery why it had taken so long.
I have eaten there several times before, and the food had always been quite good, but frankly, today's meal was poor, with the one redeeming feature that it was, at least. better than the service.
Do yourselves a favour JL and either restrict the restaurant to pre-packaged food, or appoint some managers who have actually been involved in some way in the catering business to put some spring into the step of those who work there, because the people there today, didn't have a clue. The problem is sadly not even confined to Southend, as the food and drink service at Basildon suffers from the same peculiar idea that the people on the tills should also make the drinks. Go to any coffee-shop or fast-food outlet and you will not see this system in operation. It keeps the costs down, but loses business as people get bored with waiting and go for coffee or a snack elsewhere, or just, like me, give up on eating or drinking there.
This is an expensive club, and you really should not be scrimping on staff costs at the expense of people who are paying for premium facilities....
Read moreThe members are friendly and facilities are clean with a large workout area. I was appalled at the coldness of the house staff at reception which completely ruined my experience visiting. I completely echo that if you try out as a guest you will be treated as a third class citizen/ very much unwelcome. Although its quite clear some staff make judgements as soon as you walk in through the door even if you pay the highest membership. Although I was there with existing members the tall brunette in her 40s made her own assumptions and snubbed us completely. I arrived with 2 platinum members as a guest. I explained this when we arrived. I immediately felt unwelcome by her tone of voice, first questioning if I have the app, which I dont think is fair given iam a guest and I explained I couldnt recieve the code due to poor signal inside the gym to set it up. Second it was checking my name on the database with a "oh your name is here". The cherry on the icing is that the 2 platinum members scanned their codes through the gate FIRST , i may add one of the members even showed the glorified receptionist their membership on the app to let me in, if she was paying any attention rather than being prejudice in her assumption they were "not platinum members" she would notice they pay a premium (£200 a month!!!) To use facilities. When one of the members asked for towels after they scanned in she had the nerve to reply "Towels are for platinum members only", when the member I was with confirmed we are platinum members she then said "guests have to pay £2 for towels" instead of apologising for her assumption ! The snobbiest behaviour for a gym front of desk I have ever seen and would never sign up based on how unwelcoming and rude this member...
Read moreYou pay a premium but for those that live locally it is one of the closest gyms/pools (clubs) in the area that offers everything you could need.
If I break down the cost of just using the pool alone it actually makes the cost make sense, if I was for example to use the pool every day and I do get a small discount on my membership it’s cheaper than using a different pool which I won’t name them, but I’d have to pay about £5.50 per use not even for the day, but with David Lloyds club I can go morning and afternoon and evening if I wanted to and also I don’t need to book a specific time to use the pool either which is amazing these days as since Covid many pools you have to book on advance and have a very limited slot and only offer just a pool nothing more which has not only frustrated myself but many I know that have to do this and it’s honestly a pain to book in advance on limited slots.
I know it’s not cheap but for the pool cost alone if you use it every day or twice in a day then you will get your moneys worth and you have to remember that’s not the only facility they have, you can also use the gym and then swim, play tennis if you so desire, so for the cost to what I can use compared to others out there and for myself how close it is, it is definitely not the worse deal in the world and I do get it slightly cheaper which does help but not by a whole lot.
The staff are lovely and are fantastic so if you do need any help you know exactly where and who to go to.
The only reason it is not 5 stars is the price it should be slightly cheaper but that’s the only reason it won’t be a 5 star review nothing but an honest review from daily use for the past 2...
