The most interesting watermill, with such a vast history and stories attached to it. It is a must see in John O' Groats, giving a real insight into the community and the history of the area. As well as it actually working and having weekly machinery demonstrations- where you can see it all working in action. The tickets are very value for money, with all that you get to see and learn, as well as the fact that it was opened up by a community trust! It is all very impressive and has been renovated so very well, with so much original kept (keep an eye out for lots of brilliant graffiti all over the wood which are up to 100+ years old). And not to mention the idyllic setting, with the burn running past and the view of Swona and Orkney, with all the different wildlife to watch on the balcony of the mill.

Attractive, well-presented mill. In operation from 1901-2001, a trust purchased the building from the family and opened this museum in 2025. Besides seeing the milling process, they have their first art exhibit of local paintings of the mill. I was told they also have local gatherings, dances, and use the open flooring as a community space. 30min to tour, reading the signage and take pictures of the mill, Cromwell’s Bridge, and the countryside. £10 for adults. Explains the physics involved in turning water energy into grinding power - good for kids to see and learn!

We visited the mill yesterday on its opening, and had the pleasure to have a quick chat to Rodney, who also looks after the cottages next door. Rodney worked in the mill when he was a small child and he had amazing stories about the mill itself and the area around John O'Groats. Lovely conservation project with lots of posts explaining the history of the Northernmost mill in Scotland. Highly recommend a stop here. The place is wheelchair friendly with a lift throughout the three floors of the museum.

We stayed in the Stables cottage for a holiday which was a lovely cozy place and next door to the John O Groats mill. The mill has been renovated to a very high standard and you can walk round, read the history and see how the mill worked. On Sundays the mill is working. Well worth a visit to see how the industry worked until quite recently. Also do try the ginger biscuits from Orkney they sell there, divine! The Mill is a Registered Charity and well worth supporting. The income from the 2 cottages also support the charity. If you want a great relaxing holiday it is a good place to stay. A few minutes and you are on the coastal walk and can walk down to the...
