J.August Jewelry Consignment — Local services in Amherst

I recently purged my jewelry collection of pieces that I just didn't wear anymore. I had been going back and forth with myself over what I wanted to do with them: sell them on Poshmark or eBay? Take them to a consignment shop? Then I passed J. August one day and saw their sign saying that they buy jewelry. So I stopped in. They purchased about 90% of what I had brought and while there were a couple of pieces in the collection that I might have made more on if I had listed them on eBay or Poshmark, I understand that they need to be able to make a profit on what they buy. And by selling to J. August, I walked out with cash in hand (actually, I requested a check so I could deposit it into my bank account but I absolutely could have walked out with cash in hand) and without the hassle of trying to sell the pieces online. Had used this jeweler for years and until recently it had been fine, good prices prompt service but recently whenever we have work done prices are astronomical, when sizing 2 rings it cost $100 and they keep the gold which normally would be fine but the ring we had sized reduced size by almost double so they definitely made their money off of us in weight of gold and then charged us too. One of the rings we had sized they also cracked the ring and the stone in it and didn’t mention it hoping we wouldn’t notice. We also had a ring under warranty that we had them put our daughters birthstone in, it didn’t sit flush like we expected it to and then it got very loose and we dropped it off for repair under warranty to have it set flush and tightened. It’s been a couple of years, but I had to come back and rate this jeweler. I’ve been incredibly satisfied with the repairs I’ve had done, including necklaces, watch batteries, and my antique diamond engagement ring. All service has been excellent, but they truly won my business the day that my 5 year old daughter slipped a tiny baby ring on her finger and didn’t mention it to me for several hours. When she finally did, her finger was blue and swollen and I loaded my kids all into the car to drive to the closest ER. On the way I decided that a jeweler might be better equipped to handle the ring situation, and called over.
