March 2025 Edit/Update
With a heavy heart, I have been informed during my annual oil change that my bike may not have much life left in it. I rode it sparingly, but frequently to keep the carbs clean (usually a few miles every few days). My local mechanic/dealership here used to be called Waco Yamaha, but now they encompass several other brands too. Here is the damage as reported by them, and I will share it with photos as well. Despite not putting a thousand miles on this bike since getting it, chunks of metal were found in the engine when doing the oil change. See 2 of the chunks below. Compression level for the V Star 250 engine is supposed to be about 150 PSI, but mine was reading half of that at about 70 PSI. I have already paid the hundreds of dollars for the new tyres and oil, brake fluid, and then chain and sprocket adjustment/cleaning. To get bad news and expense added to this is disheartening, especially when I came back to edit this review and see I only made the original review 10 months ago. So what does this mean for me as a customer? Well, my bike still remains at the shop. We will borescope it out and possibly check valves as well, depending upon labour time, but other than that? I may have paid cash for a bike I get to use for only less than a year. I do not know if Monkey Moto checked the compression rate or what else they may have looked at before selling the bike. Even now, surprisingly, it starts up and sounds smooth, so I can't blame them for missing it. They were very friendly and professional, and perhaps I got a lemon. It happens. At this time, I anxiously await what my bill will be and I am feeling sorry for my misfortune. It was a nice little bike that was meant to be a learner, but it seems that it may get its service life cut short, before it can fully fulfill that calling.
Update: I called the manager to inquire about what may have happened, or what they felt could have been the issue. Sadly, instead of good customer service, I was met with defensiveness and attitude.
Here is the synopsis of his response:
“I am just a technical advisor, I don't look at reviews. We maintain race team bikes, and sometimes things fail. I don't have a crystal ball. Even Formula 1 cars fail, there are sh___y bikes out there that fail. How is that my shop's fault? You rode it and it was perfect, that's on you.”
At no point did I blame Monkey Moto for the bike's failure, however my intention was to let them know that a bike they sold only lasted about 10 months and 500 miles. It seems that my initial thought of letting management know were misguided on my part, as the unnamed manager above made it clear to me that whatever my issues were, it 'wasn't their fault' and the moment my money was in the hands of the dealership 'it was on me'.
Noted, sir. You have just talked yourself into losing a customer and word of mouth regarding business (and on social media)...
Read moreI had an incredible experience at MonkeyMoto, thanks to Pedro and the entire crew! Pedro made the whole process of getting my bike smooth and stress-free. He wasn’t pushy at all he truly listened to what I was looking for, made sure everything was lined up perfectly, and took the time to verify every detail throughout the process. On pickup day, Pedro and Mr. Kevin went above and beyond they literally rearranged the whole store just to present my new bike in an unforgettable way. It was top-notch, first-class service! Pedro even allowed me to take footage of the whole experience, which made the moment even more special. When we first started up the bike, there was a slight hiccup with an engine light coming on. But the mechanics jumped on it immediately and had it resolved within a few minutes like it never even happened. That quick action and professionalism just reinforced how much pride they take in their service. Even though I couldn’t test ride the demo bike at the time, the offer was there without hesitation another clear sign they really care about the customer experience. Special shoutout to the parts team too the lady at the counter was super friendly and patient, answering all my questions about accessories, even when I know I was probably being that guy asking a million things. Overall, Pedro was awesome, the entire team was phenomenal, and I would 100% recommend anyone and everyone to go see them at MonkeyMoto. They made a big moment in my life even bigger and I couldn’t be...

Small back story: Before I moved to Texas in 2001...... In the mid 70's my first bike was a Hodaka 125 Wombat, after chatting about my escapades deemed Evil Knobby the summer of 75.....then shortly thereafter I aquired my first new, 75 Kawasaki H1F 500 I test rode, wheelied, bought, and rode home. Traded my Hodaka + $50. for a Husqvarna 400CR (motor and parts in a metal feed basket) told by the arrogant seller that: "You'll never get it running!" after paying him. My best friend Steve Kuhlman and I got it put back together and I was wheelieing it by dusk. 78 GS1000EC Suzuki's first liter-class, 82 Suzuki GS1100E, 83 Honda ATC200X, 74 Suzuki RL250, 72 TM 250, 81 Yamaha YZ465, (Wheelied too far/ broke coccyx) 96 Honda CBR1000F, 2000 RVT1000 (RC51), 2005 BMW 1100S Boxer Cup Replika, 2007 BMW R1200GSA (Wheelied thru 6th gear everyday and country road rides on Sundays with Dallas area elites inc.
