The Farmer's Market is a great program. You can either use cash, or sign up for the nutrition classes sponsored through UGA to get tokens to spend there. I did the latter, and it's a definite blessing to be able to get free fruits and vegetables. They have potatoes, cherry and regular tomatoes, okra, bell peppers, garlic, onions, apples, pears, zucchini, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, fresh bread and eggs, and a lot of samples to try. They sell apparel, and have different vendors with various wares. It takes place on Saturday 8am-12pm at Bishop Park, and at Creature Comforts from 4pm-7pm, both of which are located in Athens, GA. There's always a group of friendly people to greet and assist you. If you are part of the Farmer's RX program, they offer assistance with getting to the Farmer's Market too, which is helpful for individuals without a way to get there. They give you a certain number of tokens, based on your household size, and you get those every week. Overall, I recommend this place for all ages, and it's even...
Read moreOh my goodness! Learned so much today from talking with these friendly vendors... Elephant garlic is actually a leek and you can roast it 45 min to a gooey, spreadable paste delicious on bread.... You can grow garlic! The size of the clove determines size of bulb - plant in October in Sunny spot, water through winter (covered with straw) cut some of the green growth in spring and use like green onions except will taste like garlic 😯, harvest in June by pulling up when growth turns brown!... And! Ate some raw Burmese Okra! Oh my! Delicious!! This strain can be up to a foot long and still be tender and delicious, the skin is smoother, and when you cook it, it's much less slimy! But raw, y'all, what a great crunchy snack! Beautiful flowers, great cooked food options, beautiful organic produce and beautifully kind folks! Fab morning! People, cute kid, and cute dog watching all wonderful too! Oh. And the live music had just the right vibe! ...
Read moreThis is a great farmer's market! You'll find over half a dozen different farms with fresh seasonal produce. There's a stall with flowers, a stand with local honey, a coffee table, a cheese stall, some jellies and preserves, a few jewelry places, and some baked goods. Looking for some fresh mushrooms? There's a stall for that too. Add in the food trucks just outside the entrance and you've got a fun morning. Almost all of the market is situated under the pavilion and out of the sunlight, so even in the summer you don't suffer too much. Definitely missing The Comerian bakery's stall but Independent has amazing products too! I only recommend going early because the parking lot really fills up fast, and this place is CROWDED. That alone should speak to the popularity of this market in the Athens community. Keep an eye out for the UGA gardening extension for free seeds and any gardening...
