I've been doing CrossFit on and off for 4.5 years in various cities around the country. My job has afforded me the opportunity to move to new places, and every time I land somewhere I take my time to find a box that I feel will be a good fit. I recently moved to a new neighborhood in Denver and was on the hunt for a gym that was a bit more convenient. I had picked out three locations to try and made it to one before landing at DeCO. I emailed Leslie the owner through the site and asked if I could do a drop in Friday at noon (I had the day off due to working the weekend.) She responded right away with a "YES" and said she would let coach Andrew know to look out for me.
I had been cyberstalking DeCO for a while to get a sense of their programing (it's good), but it can still be nerve-wracking to walk into a new box as you have no idea what the culture will be like. Some CF gyms do unfortunately live up to the stereotype of too much testosterone and ego. But - for those of you who think (like I once did) you'll never find a place in the CF world - not all gyms are like that, including DeCO. It's all about health and not about intimidation. Seriously, everyone here is SO nice and encouraging. I never made it to that third gym because once I completed that first WOD, I knew I found my new CF home.
Now, it's not all rainbows and butterflies. Every WOD kicks my a**. I rarely Rx and sometimes even get lapped (I hate it when that happens). But I find I push myself harder than I would on my own, and I actually feel stronger every time I walk out the door. That said, as a physical therapist, I am very aware of the risk of injury that comes with any fitness activity, and I appreciate the high caliber of coaching DeCO provides to ensure all movements are performed correctly. I also appreciate the well thought out programing, the cleanliness of the facility, the good condition of equipment, as well as the other options they offer, such as Olympic lifting classes, yoga and run club. They have a free class on Saturday AM (coffee from The Molecule Effect provided!) if you're interested in checking the place out. Some other perks of DeCO: attending classes gives you credit towards massages! And they have showers! And there's a brewery next door! I mean, what else can you...

Read moreNot only does Crossfit Deco provide a great environment to improve a person's fitness level, it also provides a great community environment that is truly inspirational. So many crossfit gyms get a reputation for being unsafe, for pushing their clients with little regard to safety or proper form. Crossfit Deco is not like that - Leslie and the coaches not only take time to correct form and provide modifications for all fitness levels, they also take a personal interest in people's fitness goals - and their life goals in general. Visits to Leslie's gym are the highlights of my week. Since starting back in March (2014) I have noticed a positive change in so many aspects of my life. At so many other crossfit gyms, unless you can to the Rx weight, etc. the other members look at you like you don't belong. At Crossfit Deco, there is such a good mix of people and everyone is so encouraging to each other, no matter what a person's fitness level is. Also, Crossfit Deco does so much to help the local community (Boys & Girls Club, charity of the month, etc.) that I feel both proud and honored to be a part of this fantastic crossfit family. No matter what your fitness level, no matter what your goals, if you are looking for a great group of people who will support you on every step of your journey, you will not find a better gym than...
