This review will be positive. Why..? I live across the street and have play this old gal so many times I have lost count. I love this place for the history, the old style layout (designed before golf carts) and the wonderful value, along with the best breakfast taco's I have had the pleasure to enjoy anywhere, at anytime in the history of the world. The driving range, under the oaks that are hundreds of years old, is one of the most pleasant locations to practice in the entire United States. After reading some of the reviews it dawned on me that most golfer's who don't care for the old gal complain about this and that, it's too short, the greens are slow, can't even come close to breaking even par, and that's with the most modern equipment. I humbly would love to point out that more rounds are played on this public facility than any other golf course in the entire State of TeXas, and brother & sisters that is a HeLLva lotta rounds. Some summers we have here in Austin the temperature will be well over 100 degrees every single day for 60+ days in a row. 106, 109, 104, and on and on and on, one right after the other. This green space soaks up tremendous heat, and in TeXas that could be any month of the year, February when it was 88 degrees for two weeks in a row. The facts are simple, this place is a vintage gem, and should be treated and admired as an calm oasis, a tropical island of golf and green, right in the slap dab middle of a sea of concrete, it exist side by side amiss the hustle and bustle of the modern...

I'd love to go back when the greens are running fast so I can experience the severe sloping greens on the back nine. Those greens look diabolical if green speeds pick up. Greens weren't bad, just tough on greenskeepers, I'm sure, when temps are routinely over 100 degrees mid summer. Such a great vibe at this place. Very charming. Good design with holes that have a lot of movement. #18 was a surprising let down, as it's a straightaway par 4 with probably the biggest fairway on the course. Not much of a challenge coming off some really good holes on the back nine. It did remind a little of 18 at St. Andrews, as you can just blast a driver but you may have an awkward little yardage with a wedge into the green. Golf equipment technology has really overtaken this course, as you can see how great these holes probably were when you couldn't carry a driver over many of the doglegs. It would be fun to go back and hit clubs off the tee to the corner of the doglegs, the ways the holes were designed to be played, to experience what Hogan, Nelson, etc. saw as they played. If I lived in Austin, I would certainly be a regular at Lions. It was great. 2nd group off and we walked in 3 hours 25 minutes. Mostly walkers at Lions which is my kind of place. I really hope to be back and wish Lions luck in securing the future. Go play and support local,...
Read moreIf I could give less than a 1-star review, that’s the star review I’d leave. I travel the country for work and try to play a round of golf in most cities I visit. Lions Municipal Golf Course has been my worst experience to date. The course itself wasn’t bad, however, the staff, particularly the cafe personnel; more specifically, the lady that runs the cafe, was the rudest individual I’ve come across in the customer service arena… PERIOD. The term “rude” doesn’t scratch the surface to convey how we were treated. I would be completely embarrassed if my staff behaved or treated people the way we were treated here. My recommendation would be, find another course to play and don’t put yourself through this embarrassing inconvenience. You may pay more at another course, but you get what you pay for. I highly recommend Teravista in Round Rock, TX. You will pay more, but the people and staff are incredible. Like I said, you get what you pay for. Btw… we WON’T be back. I surely hope Google reviews work so nobody else has to endure what we dealt...
