You see a ship, you see a uniform, and you think you know what I do. You think I’m about knots and lines, about deck wash and standing watches. That's part of it, sure. But my real job, the job they don't teach you in boot camp, is about pride. A clean deck, a crisp uniform, a fresh coat of paint—it's all the same thing. It's about showing respect for what holds you, what protects you, what carries you. The Self Serve Lumber & Home Center in this town has the tools to understand that. It has the paint. When I walk in, it's not the smell of pine that gets me; it's the sheer potential of the place. Aisles filled with solutions. They sell everything from high-quality materials to cheap spray cans, catering to every need but also enabling every mischief. This store is also a de facto daycare. Bored kids wander the aisles, not seeing solutions but possibilities for mischief. They giggle at the paint names, oblivious to their purpose. They don’t see technical specifications; they only see childish names—"Ocean Mist," "Sunset Gold"—before leaving. Their destination is always the same: the Veteran Memorial Bridge. I've walked that bridge and felt its weight of decades-old neglect. It's not just graffiti; it's a failure to honor something important. Each new tag is a fresh wound on a scar that never healed. The irony is striking: this store sells high-quality paint that could restore dignity to the bridge but instead provides cheap spray cans that ensure it remains a scar for eternity. The Self Serve Lumber & Home Center stands as a silent co-conspirator in this cycle of vandalism. Every time I walk into that store and see those displays side by side, I'm reminded of how easily we forget our responsibility to honor what matters.

I've been going here a long time and always find what I need. Well organized and a helpful staff.

Just sometimes things don't go good there anymore. It's touch and go. A lot of people just don't even go there no more. Not saying anything more. One thing was propane prices sometimes they don't weigh or keep track of the amount and charge u for a empty new tank. They go by a chart and it's like 5 dollars more than usual. Normal 20 lb. Tank is around 10 dollars. And I got hit for 15.67 . Two days before Was 13.70 then a day before that 12.69. then was charged 10.25. After I had said something. But I was coming every other day. price was all over the place. Normally hi. Another thing was purchasing furnace duct piping . Like a 8" by 2' was 16 dollar . I went back cuz I needed a 10" by 2' and it was 42 dollars. Thier excuse was didn't have New prices on the smaller pipe. Other people have had issues with them to.i could go on an on . Only go when have no...

I really appreciate this place! I bought a house just outside of town about 6 years ago and visited a few times to grab things I forgot after leaving a big box store in GR. Then I basically forgot about it. This year, I've got a few garden projects going and decided to check on prices and availability of things I needed. The items I needed were even less expensive than the big box stores and the staff was way friendlier and more hilarious. I had a great experience and have been back a few more times in the last month. Great...
