As a Bachelor’s graduate from Missouri Southern, my instructors were generous with sharing their knowledge. Instructors evaluated students fairly based on their participation and their understanding of the materials taught.
A member of my immediate family attended Crowder College at McDonald County. I was abhorred by the treatment she received there. Her first semesters there went by smoothly, but during her second semester, a certain instructor seemed to have it out for her. Due to the system the instructors are allowed to grade by (which grants them the ability to throw out the questions they choose), her successes were constantly marginalized. If she tested over a section and scored better than other select students, certain questions were throw out in a way that the select students made a better grade. This wasn’t on just some occasion, but every time. She might score a 75/100 (failing grade) and a student beside her would score 50/100, but due to the instructor selecting the questions that were thrown out, her grade might increase to a77 or a 79, while the other student’s grade increased to an 80 or 82.
The Nursing program’s administrators seem to believe that in order to earn a degree, you must miss the right questions. If you are someone that tends to get the hard questions and miss some of the easy ones, then Crowder College Nursing Program is not for you.
She barely dropped below the necessary test average in that class, so was removed from the nursing program, despite the fact that she passed her other courses with flying colors. This was followed by a re-admission test, which of course costs $50, which she failed by another slight percentage. She took another class designed to help prepare for the re-entrance exam. She passed the class with an A, well above her classmates. Come readmission time (another $50), she failed both the required tests, the first a HALF point below the requirement and the other two points below. Apparently their readmissions tests are much harder than any of their courses. Crowder College’s Nursing Program administrators don’t believe in second chances. In fact, they don’t seem to have a concept of what is fair in any sense.
Perhaps it is the difference between a CIS program and a Nursing program, but I believe such treatment to be downright unprofessional. One of her instructors even made the comment that perhaps the reason for her low grade was due to her age. That’s a protected class and grounds for a lawsuit. Unfortunately, she is too sweet to go through with something like that. Instead, Crowder College at McDonald County has her believing she is too old and too stupid to go back to school and do what she loves, which is helping and caring for others. I would rather tell my children not to go to college than see them attend a nursing...
Read moreI recently graduated the nursing program at the McDonald Campus and thought about writing a thank you letter to the staff but I figured this would serve a greater purpose for future nurses considering different programs.
I was an LPN for 10 years before deciding to attend Crowder College to complete my RN. As a preface, let me say that all nursing programs have their challenges, whether it be changes in curriculum or more recently, a pandemic. No one nursing program is perfect speaking as someone who has attended a few.
I live in the NWA area and I truly believe Crowder sets the standard for proper nursing professionalism and provides the tools needed to become respected licensed nurse. This includes being in touch with modern technology, from recording their lectures and posting them for students who are unable to attend, to providing students a end-of-program NCLEX review that offers online resources.
Crowder was incredibly flexible during the pandemic and gave me every opportunity to make up missed tests and clinicals due to quarantine issues. This is truly the only reason I was able to make it through the program and for that, I'm truly grateful.
To all the nursing educators, structors, and Mary Anne, thank you for helping this old dog learn new...
