"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us."

Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" implores us to realize that the reasons a hero starts a journey can be very different from the reasons that sustain the hero on their path.

You may unexpectedly come to Three Trees — as our party of ten did — surprised to experience that this newer vineyard has the best red wine in the greater Traverse City area. If the promise of a great Cabernet or Merlot helps you heed the call to adventure to throw out your group's existing plans for the promise of a spontaneous journey to Elm Valley Road, then heed the call.

However, if you are open to being moved and inspired, you will find that the heart and care embodied into every element of this winery and its people dislodges your perspective to much more important new possibilities for how we decide to live, coexist, and serve each other as humans. The wine — while essential to the experience — may be the least important part of Three Trees.

"Happiness is of great importance in our lives and masterpieces." It is no surprise that the happy people behind Three Trees are the same people behind the masterpieces of wines they offer. They — the people and their wines — are likely to make you happy as they did us. Why does this matter? In order to make a masterpiece of any kind, you have to taste a masterpiece of any kind. You will taste this at Three Trees, and it will increase the likelihood of creating your own masterpiece in your life.

"Masterpieces are not merely a superb piece of technical skill, but a record of a profound and a prophetic experience." Vineyards exist everywhere. Great wines exist everywhere. Prophetic experiences do not. What made Three Trees profound?

Jony Ive, the former Chief Design Officer of Apple, may as well have answered that question: “One of the things we’ve really learnt over the last 20 years is that while people would often struggle to articulate why they like something, as consumers we are incredibly discerning, we sense where has been great care in the design and when there is cynicism and greed.”

Pay attention to this during your time not just up north, but in your life. Are the people in your life elevating you to care about your craft and others beyond what is usual and ordinary? Or do you intuit some hard-to-articulate façade? Greed? Cynicism?

"Masterpieces can make us feel personal inadequacy and the inadequacy of our own times." For better or worse, we can't have it any other way. Only an emotional blow like this could arouse in us a deeply-rooted desire to treat others the way that Three Trees treated us and the way that they will treat you.

Thank you for everything; we will be back.

"In the end, a masterpiece will be the creation of his own...

It was by chance that we saw the sign for this winery on the way to another, so we decided to head here after. I am so glad we did. As soon as we walked in, we were taken care of not just as customers, but as friends.

We decided to get a flight, and left it to Scott. I am so glad I did. I am not the biggest fan of red wine, but have a glass once in a while. We got the Cab Franc, Merlot, and Chardonnay. The Merlot is honestly one of the best red wines I have had. It was so incredibly flavorful with a hint of dryness. I loved it so much we bought a bottle! I also have to rave about the Chardonnay, another type of wine I don't usually order because I don't love the oakiness. Again, this Chardonnay was amazing, as I could take more than oak.

With the flight, Scott's son brought out a small plate with two types of cheeses, tomatoes, and a homemade sea salt and fennel bread. The food was amazing and paired very nicely with our wine.

As someone who has been to Traverse City multiple times, and try to visit our favorite places at least twice a year, I have a new winery to add to my list. Thank you for the hospitality as well as the great wine! My husband and I are so excited to see...

Not only did Three Trees have some of the best reds (both the Merlot and Cab were chefs kiss) I’ve had in all of Michigan and the US for that matter, but the openness of the Owners and the staff were what made our experience beyond phenomenal.

Our group had one of the best experiences here, the laughter, conversation, and of course the wine, made the night into something out of a movie. I’m convinced you could hear our boisterous laughter from a hill away. And having the vines so close to the seating was very pleasing to see, and enhanced the ‘farm to table’ feel.

In an age of rampant digital consumption and phone addiction, Three Trees was the reprieve we all needed to unplug and connect with each other.

We could clearly see how much dedication and thought went behind the place, a perfect mix of rustic and modern, with the cherry on top being the service. Scott and Phil and staff, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your time and grace. And Cooper sends his best ‘woof’ for you as well.

To anyone reading this, please go to Three Trees, you will absolutely have an unforgettable experience, I have full faith in that.

Until next time friends, The...

In a place that is renowned and adored for its small town feel, sometimes Traverse City and its business lose the sense of hospitality and beauty the locals know made it famous. However. Three trees vineyard captures the intimacy and neighborliness that seems to get lost in translation. Upon parking, you’ll find yourself greeted with a small walk but an arms length away from the very fruit you’re about to enjoy, to a humble yet elegant barn and tasting room. On entrance you’ll notice up to date decor, calming music, and a very accommodating staff. While the selection is smaller than some of the millionaire backed vineyards in the area, you can tell that each drop of wine and cider that pours through the taps and bottles inside is treasured and cared for in order to provide the best possible experience for its patrons. If you’re looking for a humble, intimate, and authentic experience in the now, metropolis of the north. Be sure to stop in next time you’re in the area. 10/10
