My aunt and I, along with a friend of ours, had such a wonderful experience at this beautiful monastery.
We were fortunate to receive a guided tour from a warm-hearted gentleman named Andrew.
During our visit, we explored the enchanting surrounding forest, where we discovered icons adorning some of the trees. We even had the pleasure of meeting some adorable goats!
The priests and monks follow strict practices, so please do not get offended if some of them do not look at you or speak to you. They mean no harm and are simply trying to focus their attention solely on God while also praying for the world (including you). They are not trying to be rude, but have simply committed themselves to God and God alone.
Women and men are asked to dress modestly, making sure that their legs and arms are covered. Women should wear a headscarf out of respect. Coverings are available at the monastery and can be borrowed if you have forgotten your own.
Visitors are also welcomed to remain for liturgy and/or vesper services. We stayed for the 6pm vesper service and were very glad that we did.
We ended our visit at their gift shop where we purchased beautiful icons to take home, as well as some delicious sweetbread made by the monks themselves. It was a wonderful day filled with...
Read moreThey have a gift shop here that I've come to twice to buy gifts--silver crosses, saints medals, icons. I kind of get the impression they would rather you order by phone or internet. Trying to figure out when a best time to arrive is a challenge; it's a monastery with a set schedule of course, but even when I arrived at suggested time I couldn't find anyone to show me to the shop, turn on lights, etc.... Not warm and fuzzy people. But I guess that's not the point of the place, is it? Retail sales are pretty far down on the list of priorities. I respect that. I just wouldn't want anyone reading this review to think it's like a trip to the mall. I really like the crosses and icons. Not cheap, but not any more expensive than you might find for similar items elsewhere. I'll close w/big, huge warning. Never, ever, cross your legs in an Orthodox sacred setting--in doing so you expose the sole of your shoe toward a person or sacred place/object and that is very disrespectful. Oh, and women have to cover their heads and have arms and legs covered,...
Read moreYears ago I visited for prayers for my brother and whole family. It's so beutiful, you feel it.when you pray. So deferent from regular Gr.Church. of cource they are strict, but that is as use to be . I can't say enough good thinks. And you are invited in the end to have meal with them.they share. All is home cooked, they grow their own vegetables if I remember correctly. For me 4 plus stars.and if you go bring something like flour, sugar, oil, they use it and put it on the small table they have .or ask to were to give to. Excellent place to meditate. For Greeks No fuss no noise! ..woomens separate in one living room style , with beautiful large windows from man ,Man stay in front and pray there if they want too or seat and quietly enjoy the piece. My experience was 10 years ago, I am sure is the same today....
