Read moreI don't know when this shelter made so many changes but it's amazing. When I was growing up we all knew this as the kill shelter, every animal there was on a time limit waiting to expire. There was no way to search for your missing pet unless you showed up during their business hours and went from kennel to kennel. It was the most depressing place ever and so hard to navigate. Now it's is a completely new place. Of course it's still sad because of somany dogs needing homes but there is no expiration date, there are volunteers and staff playing with the dogs. Treats on the front of the kennels and the dogs have blankets and toys. The staff and volunteers love these animals and name them, they get to go for car rides and socialize with other dogs. I found a dog last week and I posted online that I would be taking him to Ojai. I absolutely did not want to drop him off at the kill shelter in Camarillo. I was attacked online about this, lol, so I did my research and went to Camarillo to check the shelter out. The people online were right. I left the dog with them while they posted his photos for his owner to find. No owner came, he was neutered and microchipped and I was able to pick him up yesterday. Since I found him I had first rights. He had a vet check. The vet came and spoke to us about his surgery and the sever case of worms he had that had already been treated. We also had a staff/volunteer come out and talked about his behavior there, her name is Jennifer and she is awesome. She went on a long walk with us so we could introduce our current dog to her new brother. The entire experience is amazing and Henry is now settled into his new home thanks to this shelter. Sorry this is long but so many of us remember this as the kill shelter and it is not the same place it was 20 years ago and I wanted to make sure more...
Read moreI just adopted a second dog here and they failed to inform me that she had her spay surgery the day before they released her to my care. I also was not given thorough instructions for her care after surgery. Due to her surgery, she had been sick for the past 5 days and is just now starting to improve. The first night home, she was suffering from gastritis, vomiting and dehydration, but still drinking water. I made an appointment with a vet two weeks from now but was unable to get an appointment with any other in my area. I was told she might have an infection and needs to be looked at. On the surgery discharge instructions that VCAS gave me, it says to call if I was unable to get an appointment. When I called I was told there was nothing I could do but surrender her, because their vet could not see her if she was already in my care. It is a surgery that their doctor performed and an animal that is having complications the DAY AFTER SURGERY. I continued calling around and reached a veterinarian’s office whose kind technician gave me detailed care instructions since the doctor was ill. VCAS does amazing work, however please be warned that they will adopt animals out immediately after surgery with minimal instruction. They also do not hold themselves accountable for any adverse effects from the surgery. Luckily her situation has improved so far, otherwise I might be stuck with an enormous ER vet bill or I would had to abandon her back at the shelter which is so awful. Not to mention they gave her to me knowing that she would not be able to be fully socialized with my first dog until two weeks from her surgery date. If this happens to you, feed the dog plain chicken with broth, white rice, and a little bit of plain pumpkin. The dog might also be drinking water too quickly as a result of the carprofen they are given...
