Looking for a perfect summer day trip with family or friends? 🌞🏖️ Head over to Cull Canyon Lagoon in Castro Valley — a hidden gem for locals and visitors alike! This spring-fed swimming lagoon offers a clean, calm, and warm-water experience ideal for families with kids, casual swimmers, and anyone looking to relax in the sun. The beachfront is sandy and clean, and there are plenty of shady areas under trees or near the picnic tables to take a break. Lifeguards are always on duty during operating hours, giving an extra layer of safety while you enjoy the water. 🏊‍♂️🛟 ✅ Important Tips Before You Go: • Arrive Early! 🌅 Parking and picnic spots fill up fast, especially on warm weekends and holidays. There’s free parking right near the entrance, but it can get crowded by mid-morning. If you’re planning to grill or set up for a group, coming early is a must! • Bring Cash or Card for Entry: Entry is very reasonable – just $5 for adults, $3 for kids, and free for children under 2. It’s a great value considering the quality of the facilities and the relaxing atmosphere. • Food & BBQ: There are barbecue areas and picnic tables throughout the park, making it a great spot for cookouts. Be sure to bring your own supplies – charcoal, grill tools, and of course, plenty of food and drinks! • No Alcohol Allowed, and glass containers are prohibited, so pack accordingly. 💧 The lagoon is chlorinated and filtered, making the water clear and pleasant even during the hottest days. It’s shallow in many parts, which is great for younger kids and anyone who prefers to wade instead of swim. There’s even a small roped-off area for toddlers and little ones, so everyone can safely enjoy the water. 💺 You can bring your own beach chairs, umbrellas, floaties, and beach toys. There’s a soft, sandy shore area where kids can build sandcastles while parents relax under the sun or in the shade. 🌲 Surrounded by trees and rolling hills, Cull Canyon feels like a peaceful retreat, yet it’s only a short drive from most Bay Area cities. Whether you’re looking for a quick splash, a full-day picnic, or a birthday barbecue, this lagoon checks all the boxes. 📍Location: Cull Canyon Regional Recreation Area, 18627 Cull Canyon Rd, Castro Valley, CA 🕘 Check opening hours before you go (typically open from late spring through Labor Day, weather permitting #CullCanyonLagoon #BayAreaSummer #FamilyFun #HiddenGem #SwimmingSpot #CastroValley #NorCalBeaches #BBQDay #SummerVibes #LocalEscape #LagoonLife

A Solid Family Swim Spot with Room for Enhanced Fun! Cull Canyon Lagoon consistently earns its stripes as a reliable 3.5-star destination, particularly for families seeking a safe and enjoyable swimming experience. The sandy beach is a definite highlight, providing a natural, comfortable feel that's perfect for laying out or for little ones to build sandcastles. The chlorinated lagoon offers clear, well-maintained water, and the presence of attentive lifeguards is a major plus, ensuring peace of mind for parents. It's truly an ideal spot for younger children, with ample shallow areas that allow them to splash and play safely. However, even with its strong points, there's room for improvement, particularly when it comes to maximizing the fun factor and user experience. One area that can feel a bit cumbersome is the array of restrictions, even after individuals have demonstrated their swimming competency. While it's understandable that facilities need rules for safety and crowd control. Passing a swim test should, ideally, grant a bit more freedom within designated deep-water areas, and the current system can sometimes feel like an "unnecessary restriction" for those who have proven their abilities. These rules, while well-intentioned for overall safety, can detract from a continuous and uninhibited swim experience. Perhaps the most significant missed opportunity for enhancing the park's appeal, especially for older kids, is the absence of dedicated water slides. While the lagoon offers a pleasant swimming environment, it lacks the kind of dynamic water features that could elevate it from a good swim spot to a truly exciting aquatic destination. Imagine the joy and extended play that a few well-designed slides could bring! Adding even a modest set of slides, perhaps separate from the main lagoon to maintain its current character, would undoubtedly increase the draw for families with a wider age range of children, offering an extra layer of thrill beyond just swimming. In conclusion, Cull Canyon Lagoon remains a solid choice for a day out, particularly for those with younger children who appreciate the sandy beach and safe swimming conditions. Its 3.5-star rating is well-deserved for its existing amenities and family-friendly atmosphere. However, by re-evaluating some of the post-swim-test restrictions and, most importantly, considering the addition of swim slides, Cull Canyon Lagoon could easily elevate its status, offering an even more comprehensive and thrilling experience for all...

Great place to bring the kids and toddlers. $2/ kid$ seniors and $4/ adult. Kids under 1 are free. The water is shallow and there are always 3-4 life guards on duty. If the kids pass a swim test they can swim in the deep area and out to the dock. You have to be in the Water with your kids under 7 at all times. This is a man made lagoon and I’m pretty sure they treat the water with chemicals, cuz it smells like it. Beautiful trees in the back and wild turkeys come to drink in the late afternoon. Lovely place. You can bring food and set up for a day at the lagoon. They do have picnic tables and a grass area, but they remain in the sun until late afternoon. Bathrooms are clean and they have showers available. You can bring your own canopy and set up right at the waters edge. They also have a few bbq, first come first serve. I took one star off because they are a bit rude when it comes to closing time. I was in the shower with my kids and one of the rangers ( a man) stood at the bathroom entrance and kept counting down the time. It was totally inappropriate because we had little privacy. He could easily see into the showers and changing area and I felt really uncomfortable. He could have just waited outside the bathroom and yelled 10 minutes left and everyone inside would have heard it....

A beautiful place for a picnic, though if you’re gonna be a big group I recommend reserving an area. The place is divided in two, the swimming area which is by the lagoon and then the picnic area which has a sand volleyball court and grills. The lagoon opens after the entire site opens and people often line up before it does because there is a limited amount of people allowed in and also because there aren’t too many tables in the lagoon area. Another important thing I noticed was that there is a bathroom available but it’s a porta potty, the actual bathrooms are inside the lagoon areas past the gate, in order to use the actual bathrooms even if you aren’t going to swim in the lake you need to pay the fee to get the wristband. As for the actual lagoon, it’s not very deep, which is good for children. The water was cloudy but not full of algae or dirty which was nice, there was also a lifeguard on duty. There was also Spanish speaking staff on the day we went which was...
