The staff at this shelter didn’t just mistreat me with bias.. their actions showed malice. One staff member actively worked to sabotage my community ties and access to support for weeks after I had already left the shelter.
It’s one thing to personally dislike me, but it’s another to weaponize professional positions and reach into my life to cut off help. Staff were furious because my “education didn’t match my income,” and because I stood firmly on boundaries for myself and my children. In response, confidentiality was broken with volunteers, my name was slandered, and I was pressured into assessments and releases under threat of consequences.
The most painful part was having my postpartum depression which I disclosed while asking for support... twisted and used as “proof” that I was wrong, unstable, and crazy instead of treated with compassion.
