Nice course. The starter was fine and the ranger (I think he said his name was Don) was great. The course itself was great. My problem was with the man taking payment. At the break, between doe and buck, I went to get cigars for our group. We asked and they said it was ok as long as I was quick. I got back in 8 minutes. Upon my return I found the man from the front desk berating the rest of my group.
I have been golfing for over 20 years and have never experienced anything like this. We were courteous, asked permission and, of course, offered to let any groups behind us play through if we would be holding them up. This man continued to harass us and even upon several apologies continued to say we were troublemakers and he’d have us kicked off the course.
There are several very nice courses in western New York. My experience has always been one of over the top friendliness at any course. I will not ever return to Deerwood thanks to this experience. They already had a poor reputation for such attitude and even the group in front of us said they would not be returning before the round even started thanks to their experience with the man at the desk. I hope the course will make the correct considerations in making their experience great...
Read moreCourse is well maintained for a municipal course. 3 nine hole courses. Layout of Buck and Doe is straightforward and flat but still fun to play with trees lining the fairways. Fawn is shorter but is more challenging and has more character. Condition of the course is great considering the price that they charge for it. It obviously isn't going to be at the level of the best courses in Buffalo but its still well kept and fun to play. Much better condition than some others like Audubon and Grover.
No Marshalls and close tee times which makes pace of play a bit slow at times. They have a cart lady who sells drinks but only accepts cash. Has a putting green but no driving range. Great 9 hole rate with cart at $28 for non residents. Fall rate is even better at $20 with cart. Playing 18 walking is $20 in the fall. Extremely good value here. Lots of seniors play here.
Only thing to note are some of starters here are pretty incompetent at their jobs. You can easily walk on as a single here but they make it difficult and sometimes they leave two courses open and put 4 groups on one course because they have their tee...
Read moreCould be a much better experience if they spaced out tee times an extra few minutes, had a visible ranger to speed up slow groups and if they mowed the greens.
It should NOT take almost 5 hours to play 18 in carts even on a Saturday. We had to wait on every hole and every shot for 2 super slow 4-somes ahead of us. We finally saw a ranger on 17 and he waved hello and kept driving.
The course is in nice shape for this time of year but the greens are brutally slow due to being overgrown.
I’m guessing the stimp rating on these greens right now is about 8, maybe lower.
The courses we usually play are 10-11. We were hammering 15 foot uphill putts that still wound in short. On the courses we usually play, we’d be 5-8 past each cup with this much putter force.
Pace of play can be an issue at any course but it’s a major problem...
