You DO NOT Save Money shopping at Save-A-Lot. The store LLC owners, need to change the name. Everything sold within Save-A-Lot, is more expensive(sometimes...much more), than surrounding grocery stores. When it first moved-into Rome, New York, I was impressed with the products & prices, and being conveniently within walking distance of home. Then, a LLC company took ownership, and screwed all customers on the store's logo. You don't save any money. Not a penny. Frozen fish, is farm raised. And it's more expensive at Save-A-Lot, than frozen fish at other grocery stores. What's worse, you can purchase fresh fish, per pound, at other stores, and save a few dollars. Garlic bread. Yes, garlic bread. Save-A-Lot, has the highest price for frozen garlic bread in all of Rome, New York. Same with butter(still selling at post-pandemic price), many, manyother products at Save-A-Lot, are inconveniently a dollar, and over a dollar, more than local grocery stores(Aldi, Market 32, Walmart, Dollar General). Produce(vegetables), are less-than-fresh. Romaine lettuce is typically rusted, and sold for more than what the other popular groceries sell lettuce for. Fruit typically goes bad in a very short-time if purchased from Save-A-Lot. Bananas, oranges, apples. Two days in your home and they're over-ripe. The prices at Save-A-Lot are quite ludicrous for the customers that Save-A-Lot caters to: low-income, food stamps, senior citizens. You will certainly exhaust your food stamps within a couple weeks, purchasing food at Save-A-Lot. The store brand, must be in serious financial trouble or the LLC holders, are overly greedy. I can purchase the same products(labeled differently) at Walmart or Aldi, that I could purchase at Save-A-Lot, and generally save ten, twelve, fourteen dollars per-week. To most, that's pocket change, but if you're low-income, it's a-lot of money to save when shopping. Lastly. Worse in-store music. Not everyone wants to be listening to rap or rock music while shopping. calming, attentive instrumental music would suffice. And many many times I've entered the Rome, NY Save-A-Lot, and had the reeking pleasure of marijuana. Smoke that garbage outside or discard customers that reek of it. Just nasty. Be smart. Save-A-Lot is convenient if you live nearby, and need last-minute items. You won't save any money. That's a Save-A-Lot gimmick. False-advertising. You want to save...
Read moreSave-A-Lot stores are generally located in poor neighborhoods. And the prices are for middle-class. You do not save money shopping at Save-A-lot. Vegetables are often poor quality and over-priced. Much cheaper at other local groceries. The store is mostly frozen, canned, and microwave foods. Chicken is typically fresh. And have purchased a good tasting steak, from Save-A-Lot. Dollar General, next door offers many of the same products as Save-a-Lot, at lower price. Aldi Grocery store, is less money for everything Save-A-Lot supplies. It is simply...convenient, for those in the neighborhood, whom need a few items. And that's all most shoppers at Save-A-Lot, seem to purchase. A few products. Frozen foods sold at Save-A-Lot are typically a couple to four dollars less at Aldi. Save-A-Lot, does carry frozen catfish. Very nutritious and comes from the USA. Great for frying and baking. Dairy product prices are competitive with other grocery stores in the city. Save-A-Lot is very clean on the inside, and well heated/air-conditioned. I use the store when the weather is not the best, and I need items for meals. But if you are going to be purchasing a-lot, you'd save a-lot of money going to Aldi or Walmart. The outside lobby area of the entire mall, is atrocious. I've even noticed needles. And cigarette butts could fill a dump truck. And none of the stores, bother to clean the outside of windows. Trash cans are over-flowing, and may get emptied once a week. For the money these stores pay to lease space, they should really get after the building owner, to make the outside...
Read moreSave-A-Lot is quite similar to Aldi, so expect to bring your own bags or use any empty cardboard boxes or cases to assist carrying out your groceries. There are bags you can buy that are plastic and cheap or reusable and decently durable. I haven't experienced anything bad at the store, at least nothing that would warrant a negative review. You just have to keep an open mind about the products that are mainly sold because they're not common off-brand groceries. However some are surprisingly good and a great budget substitute to expensive name branded goods. The four star rating isn't the store's fault, but it can affect your shopping experience: the customers. I've met some "fine" examples of humanity. Nothing specific, but just be prepared to get an awkward experience with the people that don't work there. The employees are great. They're typically looking to make sure they got...
