I went in to the fly shop after just moving to the State and having heard about the Gunpowder river being close enough for me to fish in the evenings after work. The store owner took the time to go over the fly’s that have been working well as well as pointing out spots on the map that they recommend to fish given the current conditions as well as reports for the fisherman out on the river concerning were people were swimming. As I was finishing up my perches of the licenses and a few of the fly’s that were doing well the owner asked about the wading boots that I had with me and when he found out that I had felt soled he kindly informed me that they were not allowed in the stat of Md and offered me a loaner pair of boots for the day. I cannot tell you how happy I was with the customer service of the Backwater Angler fly shop, it is good to know that there are still a few people out there that are willing to take the time to pass on good information and not just worried about the bottom line!!!! My brother and I recently got some starter fly-fishing rods and were going out on the gunpowder to catch trout for the first time, and we stumbled upon this store looking for a place to get some flys and other tackle from. Not only did we end up purchasing some high quality gear, but the employees assisted my brother and I in getting our fly-fishing licenses (a process they made timely and simplistic), provided guidance when it came to what flys to pick, how to fish them, and where to fish them, and even took the time to help us rig up our rods properly so we had the best shot at catching our targeted species. I’ve stopped by Backwater Angler now for the last two weekends on my way to the Gunpowder and had a wonderful experience on both occasions. A transplant from Colorado, I’ve had the good fortune to fish many of our nation’s finest trout streams and have been in many highly respected fly shops. Backwater Angler is exactly what a fly shop should be. The atmosphere is non-pretentious and the staff is friendly and clearly very passionate about what they do.
