*update 7/2024 - I've seen the tactic employed at mattress stores and used car lots, but this takes the cake. I buy meat from Brooks hires almost exclusively, because they are close-ish to the house and I can catch decent sales on occasion to stock up.
That ribeye, usually floats around $8+ a pound. I catch it on sale for about $6 every once in a blue moon. But get this. When it goes on sale for buy one, get one for $.01, (a penny) that's when they bump up the price to $15+ to mark it down as a sale item. That bogus. Spoke to the cashier lady and she had no idea that news being done, but did mention, she had just bought some recently at the buy one, get one for $.01. The paper ad they send out in the mailed, doesn't even cite the price to pay for the first package. You drive into town for the sale and it's not even a real sale. I mean.... It is technically, but seriously. It's a game they are playing with real people who are all struggling to make ends meet, given our current economy.
Again, although the staff is super nice and quite eclectic, I am less impressed with the corporate decision making at Brookshires. *update 4/2024 - seems that there is a miss with ordering items on sale. Drove to town solely for their brisket and was told none was ordered for the sale. When I asked a manager for a raincheck, was told they don't do that. It's pretty much the only store in Comanche to get everything we need. There are a couple staples that we have to go to Stephenville or Brownwood for but most of what we need is here, although they seem to run out of some standard items. I will have to say, some items are ridiculously overpriced, where the "sales" are through coupons that you have to add on your phone app, or you don't save. This is of course assuming the app works that day. Bag of chips is $6+ but with a coupon it's half. Pretty silly if you ask me. Meat is really high priced, unless you get the buy one, get one or if they have a huge sale. The place is clean and the staff is nice. Produce is almost always really great quality. It's all about the sales though. This economy is putting the screws to us. I'd just like to see some prices reflect what stores in the bigger cities look like. Overall they still get a four. (Now a three) Oh and the guys back in the meat market have done me some great service with some cuts and special requests. They are a great group of guys to be sure. Wish the management decision from the store level reflected their customer...
Read moreWorked in the deli. There is a whole lot of cross contamination going on. The tongs for rotisserie chicken get put under the oven that leaks chicken blood. The staff don't throw away gloves before pushing timers on the fryers. There is no alcohol wipes for the thermometer that they use to temp everything. So if a chicken doesn't temp right guess what that same thermometer is used to temp those potato logs. The hose that they use for dishes is also one that pumps floor cleaner through it. Let me ask y'all this would you use a water bottle after putting chemicals in it and drink out of it. Probably not it's the same concept because even when you switch back to water you know there has to be residue in the hose still. They clean out their mop heads and reuse them. Bakery side is no better with Melissa as the manager. Stay away from bakery and deli. The rest of the store deserves at...
Read moreThe staff here are always very helpful and friendly.
It's pretty pricey, but it's the only grocery store in town. It is convenient to shop online, though, and have my groceries brought out to my car.
I like the pharmacy a lot better before it got bought out by Walgreens. It seemed like the service was faster then even though the staff was smaller. It's still convenient, though, to pick up prescriptions at the grocery store.
The food at the deli counter is good. They serve good Southern dishes like fried okra and vanilla wafers and banana pudding: something my mother used to make.
All in all, it's a pretty nice store. They sometimes block wheelchair access to the western entrance by putting flowers and seasonal items on the sidewalk. Being in a wheelchair, that's my only...
