A short walk from parking either by stairs or paved walkway are several areas to view Blackwater Falls. They provide scenic vistas of the beautiful water cascading from atop the Blackwater River. Walking is light to medium grades. Parking is situated close to the gift shop with reasonably priced wares like gel candles, lapidary and gem stones, and more.

On the other side of the gulch, one can see the upper lookout which is considerably easier for the elderly, or those in need of handicap access. We are hikers with climbing experience, so after driving to the upper lookout, we hiked down the mountain slope to the gorge area and traversed some of the giant boulders. We ended up assisting and guiding two other less experienced hikers out of the gorge area until we were all safe at the parking area of the upper lookout.

While there are some amazing views of the falls, the rocks can be a fall hazard, and do become incredibly slippery when wet. No wading or swimming is allowed for a variety of obvious reasons. No trails are maintained, and you enter at your own risk. The grades down are extreme with slanted and steep hillsides. Reliable shoes and gear are recommended. Warning signs advise experienced climbers only! Neither locale is very far from nearby...

There is nothing like the cabin ecperience in Blackwater Falls, burning embers in the fireplace all nite keep things warm and toasty in the winter months--very romantic time I will always treasure. They have the best downhill tubing. The towns of Thomas and Davis are a unique experience--Christmas shop, ole tyme hardware store that sells almost anything, and the ice cream cone eating bears. There is a fun shop to meander in near the Falls. We really enjoyed the frozen Falls and the extra long icicles. The views are stunning. We also enjoyed the meals and views from the lodge, which also has a wonderful gift shop. BW Falls has its own climate--it is way up in the mountains closest to heaven. It is a ski haven and lovers getaway--perfect Valentines trip for two. Did I mention that the stars are extra bright and there are zillions of them. My heart will always reside in...

Beautiful State Park, we came in mid-autumn to explore and enjoy the scenery and we were not disappointed. While I have difficulty with my legs, I was elated to find steps (albeit 400+ stairs round trip) and landings, so I had a much easier time navigating the path to the falls. The hills and valleys were showing their colors the water was flowing nicely cascading over the rim in several areas. We were told there are times in the Spring when flows over the entire rim shore to shore, it must be impressive. There was a nice welcome center with the standard products with their markings. The staff was helpful and friendly and took time to explain the features and sights of the park. We left happy with what we seen and did and enjoyed ourselves. If you're in the area, I would encourage you to stop and enjoy some of the things this park...

Just 3 hours drive from the DMV, this is hands down my favorite part of West Virginia! It’s beautiful, it’s FULL of outdoor adventures, and it’s SO underrated. My recommendations for the perfect summer road trip are focused in and around Davis, but just a heads up the drive between places can be up to an hour because there aren’t many roads! ALL of this info + tons more are on my blog (Epic Weekend Road Trip Itinerary: Dolly Sods, WV) šŸ‘‰šŸ¼Which activity looks the most fun to you!? [šŸ“ŒSAVE for planning + tag your adventure pals!] 1. Hike in Dolly Sods Wilderness- one of the most unique areas in the country. I love the Red Creek Trail for all the waterfalls 2. See the sunrise at Bear Rocks Preserve- right at the northern entrance to Dolly Sods, no hiking required! 3. Hike Chimney Top via North Fork Mountain Trail- my favorite hike in WV, though a challenge for sure! 4. Visit Blackwater Falls State Park. Some must-see spots are: -Blackwater Falls (short hike) -Elakala Falls (short hike) -Pendleton point (no hiking) -Lindy Point (short hike) 5. Check out Douglas Falls- down a 4x4 road just outside the state park (continue on to Kennedy Falls) 6. Hike to the top of Seneca Rocks- OR, go climbing! Did you spot the climbers in the video? 7. Stay at Harman’s Log Cabins! We love this property and the all the opps to explore. @wvlogcabins 8. From Harman’s, hike into the National Forest for the coolest swimming hole… 9. Or just walk outside your cabin and plop a tube in the river! Peep @happilyeverexploring & @mindyonthemove who I’ve had to pleasure of adventuring here with! šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø ā›”ļøPlease help preserve the beauty of WV by staying on established trails, disposing of all waste (even food scraps), respecting wildlife, and leaving what you find. Telling you about this amazing WV state park looks like the job for me! 🤩 šŸ“Located in the Allegheny Mountains of WV, Blackwater Falls State Park is home to many of the most photographed spots in the state…including the 57-foot Blackwater Falls! šŸ’¦This beauty is accessible via a very short .4 mile hike (note: it does involve stairs) 🄾There are several hiking options here to many other waterfalls! I recommend at least adding Elakala falls. It’s a quick .5 miles out and back, or you can opt for a ~4 mile loop. šŸŒ…Definitely stop at Pendleton Point too (the overlook featured here). It’s incredible at sunset, and you can drive right to it. Don’t forget to download your virtual passport for @wvtourism new Waterfall Trail! šŸ‘‰šŸ¼Who are you road tripping West Virginia with!? šŸŽ„ shot by @happilyeverexploring #almostheaven #almostheavenwv #wvexplored #wvtourism #onlyinwestvirginia #westvirginiamountains #waterfallhikes #chasingwaterfalls #roadtrippers #blackwaterfalls #wv

In the Allegheny Mountains of WV, Blackwater Falls State Park is the perfect place to visit in any season! Just a few hours drive from DC, this park has a wide range of hiking options for all ages and ability levels. 57-foot Blackwater Falls (the main attraction!) even has a handicap accessible trail. šŸ‘‰šŸ¼Here are the spots within (and nearby) the park you shouldn’t miss! [šŸ“ŒSave for your future trip!] ā›”ļøHelp preserve the natural beauty by staying on established trails, packing out all waste (even food scraps 🐻), respecting wildlife, and leaving what you find. Visit lnt.org for more info! ā›”ļø šŸ“Blackwater Falls Overlook This ā€œmainā€ overlook offers several viewing angles, including right in front of the falls. There’s also an #AlmostHeaven swing where you can check in to the #wvtourism waterfall trail! šŸ“ Blackwater Falls from the ā€œgentle trail.ā€ This short paved trail is handicap accessible and offers a beautiful view! Just use caution in the winter- it may not be passable. šŸ“Elakala Falls A quick .5 miles out and back, or you can opt for a ~4 mile loop with the Yellow Birch Trail and check out Balanced Rock. šŸ“Pendleton Point This one is a must because it’s SO easy to get to- no hiking required. This was sunset, but sunrise might be better here. šŸ“Lindy Point This is THE sunset spot. It’s a quick .8 mile out and back hike to an amazing overlook of the Blackwater Canyon. šŸ“Douglas Falls This one is technically outside the park boundary, but worthwhile to visit! If you can make it down a rough road (4x4 recommended), it’s a very short walk. Keep going beyond Douglas Falls to see Kennedy Falls. You’ll also find Albert Falls right alongside the road (just before Douglas). šŸ‘‰šŸ¼Who are you visiting here with!?
