A short walk from parking either by stairs or paved walkway are several areas to view Blackwater Falls. They provide scenic vistas of the beautiful water cascading from atop the Blackwater River. Walking is light to medium grades. Parking is situated close to the gift shop with reasonably priced wares like gel candles, lapidary and gem stones, and more.
On the other side of the gulch, one can see the upper lookout which is considerably easier for the elderly, or those in need of handicap access. We are hikers with climbing experience, so after driving to the upper lookout, we hiked down the mountain slope to the gorge area and traversed some of the giant boulders. We ended up assisting and guiding two other less experienced hikers out of the gorge area until we were all safe at the parking area of the upper lookout.
While there are some amazing views of the falls, the rocks can be a fall hazard, and do become incredibly slippery when wet. No wading or swimming is allowed for a variety of obvious reasons. No trails are maintained, and you enter at your own risk. The grades down are extreme with slanted and steep hillsides. Reliable shoes and gear are recommended. Warning signs advise experienced climbers only! Neither locale is very far from nearby...

They have the best downhill tubing. The towns of Thomas and Davis are a unique experience--Christmas shop, ole tyme hardware store that sells almost anything, and the ice cream cone eating bears. There is a fun shop to meander in near the Falls. We really enjoyed the frozen Falls and the extra long icicles. The views are stunning. We also enjoyed the meals and views from the lodge, which also has a wonderful gift shop. BW Falls has its own climate--it is way up in the mountains closest to heaven. It is a ski haven and lovers getaway--perfect Valentines trip for two. Did I mention that the stars are extra bright and there are zillions of them. My heart will always reside in...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeautiful State Park, we came in mid-autumn to explore and enjoy the scenery and we were not disappointed. While I have difficulty with my legs, I was elated to find steps (albeit 400+ stairs round trip) and landings, so I had a much easier time navigating the path to the falls. The hills and valleys were showing their colors the water was flowing nicely cascading over the rim in several areas. We were told there are times in the Spring when flows over the entire rim shore to shore, it must be impressive. There was a nice welcome center with the standard products with their markings. The staff was helpful and friendly and took time to explain the features and sights of the park. We left happy with what we seen and did and enjoyed ourselves. If you're in the area, I would encourage you to stop and enjoy some of the things this park...
