(TLDR: The Stone Hut Fossil shop is owned by a very wholesome elderly gentleman that loves to tell you stories of his adventures if asked. The collection here of fossils, petrified wood, and beautiful stones is massive. Prices are very affordable.)
We pulled up to the Stone Hut on a Monday in between our Spring and Summer semesters. I didn't really know where to park, because the parking area just looks like a driveway. When we pulled up, an older gentleman looked out the front door at us in shock. "Are we able to park here?", I asked. The older gentleman's eyes instantly lit up with excitement, "Yes, I'm open! Please come in!"
Upon entering the building, we found fossils, petrified wood, and beautiful stones on shelves lining every wall; all of which were for sale. The gentleman happily answered every one of our questions and told us grand stories of how he acquired some of his items.
He has a fenced-off area behind his building which has several shelves and palates covered in more petrified wood, fossils, and beautiful stones. We liked this area a lot, because some of the palates contents were only a dollar or so.
At checkout, we decided to purchase several smaller fossils and one large piece of petrified wood. The elderly gentleman gave us several of those fossils for free to thank is for coming on one of the days he usually has no customers since Monday is a work day.
In summary, the Stone Hut Fossil Shop has a very wholesome environment that welcomes a customers with a warm embrace. The owner is very cheery and a joy to interact with. The collection of fossils, petrified wood and stones is ginormous to say the least, and very affordable to shop through. I would rate more than 5 stars if able, he...
Read moreIf you have kids (or not) I HIGHLY recommend checking out this shop. Make sure you check out the backyard stuff too (and say hi to Clancy, for me).
It’s a small hole in the wall shop (although the backyard is huge) and has a ton of really interesting fossils and rocks that you can buy. The Cajun guy that owns the place (I wish I got his name) is the nicest fellow. He showed us around and told us about a lot of his wares, and things he’s found. I couldn’t believe how cheap everything was and found some beautiful large petrified wood for about a quarter of the price I would’ve paid for it at a landscaping place.
He clearly does this because he enjoys it and not to make money because everything was dirt cheap. Even if you don’t get anything, it’s worth a stop by. (He also had really good recommendations for swimming and food in the area).
Glen Rose has so much cool stuff to do and visiting this shop was still one of our family’s favorites...
Read moreMr. Bussey made my surprise trip to Glen Rose the best! I have been a collector and hunter a couple years and had self-taught all I know. Because I love fossils and rocks, I had to stop by and see what they had. After filling a couple of buckets and walking around the property sharing our knowledge and findings, he invited us to a spot where he goes hunting and let us his personal tools to go digging! I nearly cried. If I had known my fiancé was taking me to Glen Rose I would have been prepared to dig, but the fact it was a surprise I could not cry about not being able to hunt. So, you can only imagine the excitement, we had to stay another night! The next day I got to show all the treasures we found and was shocked at what we came across without knowing. We are coming back soon to visit and will have to hunt together. This is a must stop after the park! You will not regret it. Thank...
