Mr. Handyman was hired to repair our porch. The quote was in the range of others and they said it would be done in one day so we agreed to have them do the job.
Day 1 was the day before Thanksgiving and the worker comes to the house to start the work. He started to pull the porch apart, but it was “more difficult than expected” so he’d have to come back after Thanksgiving – guests will have to enter through the backdoor. We also paid what was owed for the days’ work.
They come back for Day 2 the following Wednesday, after we called them to find out when they were returning. They finish deconstructing the porch, do a little bit of rebuild to the sub-structure, but again don’t finish. They also say it’s going to cost more than the original estimate and so I asked for an itemized receipt because I provided them with all surface materials and wanted to see what they were charging us for – I never received that itemized receipt. I instead get a receipt that has totals (not itemized) for labor and materials.
Day 3 happens, and they finally “finish”. As we inspect the porch, we see obvious and very crooked cuts, enormous gaps that were filled with gobs of sloppy caulk, and the left-side porch column is now crooked and hanging over the edge of the porch. When questioned, the worker made excuses and said we can talk to the owner. When asked about a particular area, we were told that WE can sand that down and paint it ourselves.
We finally get the owner to come out and look at it and he agrees that work is sub-standard. He has his most-experienced worker draw up plans to fix the poor work.
It is now January, and we finally get the owner back on the phone to find out when he intends to fix the sub-standard work. He says that he won’t come back unless we pay in full, before any additional work is done. I ask what my guarantee is that it will be done satisfactorily when it wasn’t done so the first time. I also offer to give him half of the remaining balance up front and half upon completion. He says he doesn’t trust that we will pay, which is ironic. So, we have a sloppy porch courtesy of Mr. Handyman, who’s work I will have to fix myself.
The time frame and cost were not close to the original quote. They constantly tried to speak to us as if we had no idea what we were talking about. For example, they talked about why it’s hard to make precise cuts (meaning 90-degrees – that’s right, he couldn’t cut at a right angle) in different types of materials and that the column was crooked because the “house settles” – it’s 98-years old, it didn’t settle this week! And when pressed to fix the work and stand behind it, the owner felt it would be best to part ways. So, whatever “warranty” they offer is apparently void if you disagree with them.
Needless to say, I cannot possibly recommend this company. If you have expectations about quality work, you should FIND ANOTHER CONTRACTOR. If they have quality craftsman, they didn’t...
Read moreThis is a new review of work I had done Monday, 3-Mar-25. I called at about 9:30 am because my kitchen faucet suddenly would not shut off. The man was here by 11:45 am to install a new faucet, and he did so with no issues except the usual small things everybody runs into no matter who you are. In this case my hot line was leaking past the gasket. I forget the name of it, it's a flexible line under the sink. He had a replacement, end of story. I see some of the other comments, you have to use your head what it is you're asking them to do. I am not saying anything bad about the company at all, I'm just saying you must use common sense when hiring any contractor. I fell Mr. Handyman did an excellent job. I suppose I could have done it myself if I wanted to fool with it all day into the night because I'd have had to return to the store at least once. OR I could have called a legit plumbing & heating contractor on a Emergency basis, and I bet they would have nailed me for at least 500 bucks! Again, I'm very happy with...
Read moreMr. Handyman of East Haven was fantastic! Thomas Chaisson replaced our front storm door and did an outstanding job. He was incredibly professional, friendly, and efficient—taking the time to explain what he was doing and why. He worked carefully, left no mess behind, and even managed to leave the floor cleaner than before he arrived!
The price was very reasonable, and the entire experience was stress-free thanks to both Thomas and the wonderful office staff. Scheduling was easy, communication was clear, and they always responded within a day. I also appreciated their text system and messages about our assigned handyman (including a photo!).
After so many disappointing experiences with other companies, it’s such a relief to have found a reliable, professional team. My neighbors and I already plan to use Mr. Handyman for all of our projects.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for trustworthy,...
