This was a fun find. We visited in March when it was still very chilly and windy, making the climb up the tower difficult. The views are amazing and there are some interesting stories about this place and the sordid history of the property.

Mount Davis is the highest point in Pennsylvania, with an elevation of 3,213 feet (979 m). It is located in Forbes State Forest near the hamlet of Markleton in Elk Lick Township, Somerset County. The mountain is part of the Allegheny Mountains and lies on a gentle crest of a 30-mile (50 km) ridge line extending from central Somerset County southward into Garrett County, Maryland.

You can drive most of the way up. There is a short hike you can take to the observation tower instead of the gravel road to the left. I suggest taking this path instead of the gravel road as it's much more interesting and has...

From the viewpoint of a non-hiker: This is not a place to go when it's cold and rainy. I did not climb the fire tower, but was told that you couldn't see a thing, even way up there. I think it's also safe to warn anyone who has a fear of heights, bad knees, or poor balance, that the Fire Tower may not be an option. For non-hikers, there is a decent sized parking lot, and enough information about the area to make it interesting. Going when the fall foliage was near peak, made it better. The two best things about coming here was the drive through the countryside (even in the pouring rain) and being able to cross it off my bucket list. I think it is worth our while to take a repeat trip when the...

It's not the most spectacular mountain summit I have ever visited, but it is the highest point in Pennsylvania. The road is in good shape with a nice overlook before you get to the high point. The parking area offers plenty of spaces. The walk to the high point and tower is short with interpretative markers of the geology and history of the area. The observation tower takes you above the canopy and offers views of the surrounding countryside. I'm glad we visited. I learned a little and marked another high point...

Mt. Davis in Somerset County is the highest point in PA with an elevation of 3,213 feet. (You can find the location for this on the latest statewide @purplelizardmaps) 📍This is located about 1 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh and 1 hour from Johnstown. Fun Fact: The point with the lowest elevation in Colorado is still higher than Mt. Davis. 💡 I hiked the 6 mile High Point Trail which first took me to the observation tower. It’s a 1.0 mile hike to the tower from the parking area on Mt. Davis Rd. You can choose to do an out and back to the tower and keep it short (kid-friendly) or continue on for the entire loop. I recommend if you have time doing the entire loop. This is a great hike with rock 🪨 outcroppings, rhododendrons and waterfalls. Every time I explore Forbes State Forest, I wonder why I’m still living in a housing plan 😜 and not in this beautiful forest. You can also park right by the observation tower if you would like to skip the hike. It’s a short drive to Baughman Rocks and the High Point Lake observation deck. This is definitely a fun area to explore. I’ve also been to the 2nd highest point in PA. Stay tuned for that post…😉 #hikingpa #paparksandforests #mtdavis #highestpoint #pennsylvania #visitpa #gangsta #forbesstateforest

Ok, so the hike to this observation tower at the highest point in Pennsylvania isn’t really that hard, so maybe I’m not all that gangsta’. 😂 It is a cool hike though! I am terrified of heights, so that has to count for something, right? Mt. Davis in Somerset County is the highest point in PA with an elevation of 3,213 feet.
