I ordered the black box to enhance my magna spark II ignition. I built the CB performance 1915cc kit but did a few changes and ended up with a 2054cc, 5.5 rods, Engle 110 cam, 1.25 rockers and running a single 40mm weber IDF for Baja bug. The motor is an animal. However just couldn't get the timing quite right with the existing advance. Purchased the black box and it is crazy as it is so precise and I was able to build 3 different tunes for specific purposes freeway, or off roading. It took some figuring out on how to work everything but its coming together nicely. The Staff (my rep was Mark) is awesome and always very helpful when needed.
Just an update on the bug. Ended up going to a single 44 IDF which did the trick. The motor ended up with 9.1 compression with the 110 Engle cam. The carb has 36 vents, left side idle jet is a 70 and the right side jet is 75, which evened out the plug color on both sides of the motor. The mains are 175 and the air correction jets are 160. When I tried going to 165 air corrections, the plug readings were different on each side of the motor so I went back to the 160's for more atomization and its happy. By- pass valve is O, pump jet is 80 and adjustment is nut backed out all the way then adjusted in till its just touching the accelerator pump arm. No hesitations bucking and runs very smooth kind of like a v8 just not as muscley of coarse. The motor runs smooth all the way down to 1500 RPM in 4th gear and then you can actually accelerate from there. Since I built the motor for torque my rev limiter is set at 5300 but the motor pulls to 5700 before it starts running out of carb. Has a little lope idling at 1000 but drivability on the street as well as offroad trails is very smooth.
I kept sneaking up on the timing with the black box and this motor likes more timing. The black box allowed me to really apply the timing at each given RPM and vacuum setting to get the most out of the motor. dividing the black box timing curve in 5 segments using the vacuum readings, I took the timing curves up to the point of ping then backed off until it quit in each segment. Max timing at high and medium high vacuum (10 in up) from 2500 RPM up is set at 40 degrees, although I think it actually would take a little more. From medium, medium low and low vacuum 9 to 0 in vacuum I blended the timing. I started with 0 vacuum set at 32 degrees and blended from the 40 max each RPM line from 2500 RPM up and it seemed to work perfect. A couple little tweaks here and there to get all the ping out and total result was a 3 mpg jump. Now I should tell you this motor is not a mileage motor due to the single carb but 75% of my driving is offroad. I'm guessing with the correct dual carb set up the mileage would jump up another 5 to 8 MPG. However, lately the car is so much fun to drive we end up with more Sunday drives in the bug than the mustang. The bug seems to be a conversation piece everywhere we go. I used the black box computer program to see where the timing changes needed to be and corrected those as we drove using my wife as the inputter. It worked awesome.
Finally a huge thanks to CB Performance especially Mark. I did have some issues in the beginning with the black box which Mark worked with me and I was able to get everything working...
Read moreI've spent a grip of money at this shop when I purchased a 2017 Builders Choice engine kit and an the ancillary components to complete the engine as well as other miscellaneous components for my 62 transporter restoration project.
One interaction I've had with this shop remains with me to this day and I think they need to hear it. I'm new to vintage VWs. I set a goal back in 2009 to buy a double cab transporter and restore it. I found one from a family friend 10 years later. I purchased the builders choice kit above as one of the first major components in the project. When it was time to buy the clutch disk, I looked through their inventory online and found the only one labeled as for a "2 liter engine". I bought it and when it arrived it was too big for the type 1 engine flywheel. So I called the shop and I think I spoke with Dave. I explained I wanted to exchange this one for one that meets my needs and fits. He asked if I had measured the flywheel before ordering. I humbly admitted I hadn't and that the info said 2 liter engine. He said type 3, or maybe it was type 4, engines are called "2 liters". I asked his advice for one that would be best for my needs and his response was "I don't help people who don't measure first". Fair enough. I explained that now that I knew the disk was wrong I had measured it. He picked the one I also thought would be good for me and I did buy it... But here's the thing, that comment has stuck with me since. I guess Dave has not made mistakes before. Perhaps he has and when he asked for help he was also told to go away. He's just sharing his wisdom of picking yourself up from your bootstraps and doing it yourself. Great advise.
Since that day, whenever I've had the opportunity to spend my money...
Read moreIf I could give less than one star, I would absolutely do so. They sold me an oil pump for my Porsche 914. It was listed as one part and verified by their own personnel to be incorrect. So incorrect that this pump would not allow oil to flow through the motor so could have taken out a complete new fresh Porsche 914 2.0 build. Catastrophic. When I realized the issue I drilled the pump out to make it right. After doing this I thought, I better let the manufacturer know and see what they say.
Their response was almost laughable. They offered to sell me a replacement pump at cost since I modified the one I have.
So let’s be clear here. They sent me the wrong part packaged and labeled as something totally different, it wasn’t a mistakenly sent item. It was packaged in the incorrect package saying it was something it wasn’t. After finding out about their mistake they proceeded to criticize my motor building and said you wouldn’t modify a shoe and take it back for a refund!!!!! They compared a shoe to a several thousand dollar motor build. You cannot make this stuff up!
GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! NOT HERE!!!!! PLEASE TAKE YOUR BUSINESS SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!!
I HAVE PHOTOS AND EMAILS TO BACK THIS UP IF THEY TRY TO GETON HERE AND SAY THIS...
