Matanzas Inlet Bridge Beach is one of those rare stretches of sand where you can still hear gulls above the surf more clearly than traffic on A1A. Because most visitors drive right past on their way to St. Augustine or Flagler, the shoreline stays blissfully uncrowded—even on sunny-season weekends. That means you’ll have room to stake out a blanket without bumping elbows and plenty of space to comb for shells or let the kids boogie-board.

Wildlife is the real headliner here. Pods of dolphins cruise the inlet almost daily, ospreys hover over the dunes, and you’re likely to spot skittering ghost crabs at dusk. On a calm morning the water inside the inlet is glassy enough for paddleboards, while the ocean side delivers manageable shore-break for casual surfers and anglers casting for pompano.

Access is straightforward: there’s a sandy pull-off lot just south of the bridge, and a short footpath threads through sea oats to reach both the Atlantic side and the calmer inlet lagoon. No crowds also means no services—pack your own drinking water, snacks, and shade, and be prepared to carry out every scrap you bring in.

A word of caution: the coquina rock wall that protects the inlet creates surprisingly swift currents at mid-tide, and the rocks themselves get slick with algae. Wear sturdy sandals if you plan to scramble for that perfect fishing perch, and keep youngsters well back from the edge.

Bottom line: if you crave wide-open sand, abundant wildlife, and the feel of “old Florida” beach days—without the circus of umbrellas and concessions—Matanzas Inlet Bridge Beach is worth the detour. Just respect the currents, mind the rock wall, and leave the place exactly as pristine as...

"Our family has always loved spending time at this fun spot, which has become our all-time favorite. If you're looking for a place to create unforgettable memories with your family, this is the perfect spot to do it! Just drive north past the Matanzas Bridge, take your second right, and pay the fee to drive right on down to the beach. However, please note that you will need a 4x4 vehicle to go further than where it is safe to take a...

Best place in St.Augustine! Its a different experience every visit. Clear sunny day, but there's a rainbow about 10 miles out over the ocean. Parking today was slightly full but we found a place in 5 minutes or less. So worth the wait! Most everyone was on the river side of the inlet, the beach side had a lot fewer people. This is not a body shame beach. No one cares they just want to be here for the view and...
