36 holes - each time I play I have a hard time deciding which one I like better... Cattail or Devil's Claw.
Both courses are in great shape, fun to play and plenty of challenge - especially if you decide to play the back tees - Cattail is over 7,300 yards!
The courses don't have any homes on them - the layouts are situated on the Gila River land - which also has a lot of great entertainment and hotels.
The golf carts have GPS - which helps speed up the play - however there is plenty of desert on the course so I recommend making sure you watch your ball to help find errant shots that may find the desert.
The courses are designed by Gary Panks - which by the way makes a playable course but it doesn't mean it will be easy. Water on both sides of the course come into play and there is some nice undulation. You will notice this if you decide to walk at all and let your partner drive the cart up to the green once in a while.
If you are only going to play one of them I'd probably lean toward playing Cattail - I think it might be just a bit harder but that isn't why - I love the holes with water on this course - probably one of the best settings in the Phoenix area for a course that isn't set at the base of mountains.
If you have time make sure you enjoy a meal - I've had nachos, burgers, sandwiches and salads - they are all good. The staff is friendly and...
Read moreAbsolutely terrible customer service. Called around the valley to find a place that would let us play best ball with a group of 8 for a wedding. Were guaranteed twice that we could do it here on a non-busy week day, which we did.
By hole two, we were broken up despite the original guarantee; and spent the next 16 holes waiting 5 mins each hole to tee off because we were too close to the groups in front of us. We literally were too fast for the group in front of us, but broken up because the group behind us also had to wait.
Proshop were not friendly either. Pretty course, but not worth dealing with the people who work there. Better courses in the valley.
Joke of a business.
Edit: we were confirmed twice that in a group of 8, so long as we played best ball scramble, we were good. It was a group celebration before our wedding. There was no miscommunication. We called and confirmed twice, and were told twice that it was okay.
Again, after being broken up because we “werent fast enough,” we spent the rest of the day waiting 5 minutes to tee off at every hole because of traffic in front.
If we were causing a delay, sure. But we were playing best ball. Can guarantee that we were slower playing individually in 2...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars I would. This rating is predicated not on the course itself (pretty good layout and well maintained, which is to be expected with any Troon operated track), but on the egregious customer service our group received.
Long story short, 2 members of our 4-some hold Troon cards, and we booked a time within a valid Troon rate slot. Upon arrival we were greeted by the Director of Golf (Shawn), who pulled us aside - so as to not cause a scene - and were informed that we would not be given the preferred rate, as we had changed our tee time in order to do so (something that is well within the rules of the Troon card). Shawn simply gave us a too bad so sad ultimatum. As such, we were forced to pay the full rate. Had we been notified in advance that Shawn had an issue with this we would have cancelled within the cancellation window and simply played somewhere else.
Needless to say, I will never play this course again, and would advise others to steer clear. By the looks of other recent reviews it appears this place may be turning into a goat ranch pretty quick. Luckily there are plenty of way better courses...
