Having been a film programmer for many years and a theatre manager years past, I offer my highest recommendations and compliments to Ruby Cinemas. Having been born and raised in the Triangle (Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh), and then maturing years in the Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point), I enjoyed some of the very best movie theatres throughout my upbringing. In my travels, I have also seen some of the worst. Situated in a small town with a fluctuating populace of natives, regular visitors, and tourists, and being the only game amongst several small towns, (including adjacent areas where I have resided for nigh on 25 years) Ruby finds a balance and does an excellent job of providing popular releases and new titles. Anyone seeking the expensive amenities of rocking-recliner chairs and such should pay the inflated ticket prices for same in Asheville or other highly populated territories to the east and south… after you spend the fuel and time driving there. Contrary to some argumentative reviews, Ruby does an incredible job for a small town, offering adequate and comfortable seating, screens, sound, and especially pricing. The employees are courteous, friendly, and engaging and the amenities are pleasant – auditoriums clean, attractive, and maintained; restrooms are agreeable. I also understand the difficulty in keeping the actual screens – the true centerpiece of the business – clean and bright. When patrons decide to treat a showplace like a trash receptacle and throw things at the screen, they don’t realize how delicate and easily marred are the surfaces. I’ve seen many a commercial screen irreversibly stained, pocked, and even stitched back together after being torn, leaving a permanent scar. Yes, if you see a bad spot, do inform the manager, but don’t blame them for someone’s vandalism. Screens are VERY expensive to replace.
I understand the space limitations when seeking to provide multiple auditoriums, however, my one caveat is the style of seat arrangement with the entrance corridor running down the middle. There are always latecomers to a showing – their arrivals are distracting. A European-style with aisles down each side are my preference.
Despite there being a newer, flashy (and more expensive) corporate-owned theatre nearby, my first (and only) choice is Ruby Cinemas. Thank you so very much for being there and...
Read moreMovie image quit working but sound kept going and then finally the stopped it altogether. Manager was asked to please rewind before restarting. When it finally restarted it just picked up about 10-15 minutes after where the problem started. Asked again for rewind and was told they were doing it. They never did. Missed key / best scenes from the movie (e.g. scenes alluded to in the trailer, etc.). Not even a "sorry", just excuses. I'll definitely avoid Ruby cinemas from here on out. EDIT: Regarding the 'minimal' rewind in the response. Minimal indeed. You had the ability to rewind so why not just rewind to before the point at which the picture died. If you had timestamps of everything then it shouldn't have been too hard to do. The continuity of the movie was broken and needn't have been if a proper rewind had been done. Viewers left not knowing how much or what...
Read moreHORRIBLE!! Went to the Ruby Cinema on Thursday May 22, 2014 in hopes to attend a matinee of Godzilla. Waited with three other cars from 12:35 to 12:50 hoping to see the 1:00 p.m. show. HOWEVER, the ticket window stayed close, no one answered the door and we all left at 12:50. Never even got in. YET they advertise a 1:00 p.m. matinee. I will never darken their doorstep again!!
UPDATE : The manager e-mailed me back on the "no show" which I mention above. He stated that the local news paper printed the wrong times for the wrong days. He apologized and will give me a free ticket for the movie. Turns out that the paper also had the end date for Godzilla wrong. Last showing will be on June 5, 2014. I'll try again but this time I'm sure...
