It's hard to put into words. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are fluid, as in the sands that they call home shift freely at the will of the Atlantic. There is a good reason why anyone you meet who had an OBX bumper sticker or anyone whos brain you pick about the Outer Banks can go on and on about their favorite spot to vacation but it almost always boils down to "you just have to go". There are hundreds of thousands of beaches on this earth, only a few hundred of those beaches consistently make the list of 'Best Beaches to Visit'. And of those beaches im sure you can find your own personal slice of heaven but what sets The Outer Banks apart from all of those is the extremely tight community that is OBX. Over 200 miles long and at some points less than a football field wide, set out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean you'll find seemingly endless vacation houses propped up on stilts basking in the gorgeous Carolina sun. The southern island (Hatteras) is some of the most tranquil semi tropical beach front you can access while always being within a few hundred yards from your beautiful rental house. It's hard to find such an exclusive spot that's not completely overrun with tourist attractions and wild party goers these days. We always book via 'Surf or Sound Realty'. They have excellent houses and the staff are great.
Its almost a double edged sword where I want to tell everyone how great it is there but at the same time it's still a place I dont want to see overrun and ruined by large corporations pandering to tourists. The mom and pop shops make this place feel like home, after all.
So I hope to see you there! Just don't tell too...
Read moreFebruary 2020- your off season guide to the Outer Banks. Off season is perfect for those who hate the heat and crowds. The hotel rates were significantly lower, especially through the week. Much more solitude- only ran into a dozen or so other beachcombers while taking a hour walk down the beach with my dog. Still got to see some dolphins. A lot of a touristy restaurants and shops were closed- spare the Wings, Sunsations, and Kitty Hawk Kites. Some places said they were open on Google but were, in fact, closed for the season- it’s a good idea to go ahead and call if there is a certain place you want to go. Not many other sand boarders and hang gliders to dodge at Jockeys Ridge! The Lost Colony and Elizabethan Gardens we’re closed. The attractions like the Wright Brothers, lighthouse grounds (not the lighthouses themselves), and some rental companies were still open. We aren’t fishers, but I got the impression there was several charter boat companies still open. The airplane tour companies were still open. We spent one day in Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk seeing the Wright Bros Memorial and Jockeys Ridge. Second day we drove 1.5 hours down to Hatteras to see the Hatteras lighthouse, Graveyard of the Atlantic, and Bodie lighthouse. Third day we visited Duck...
Read moreI'm from England and I came to the USA to marry my Pen-pal of 3 years in 2006.♡ We were married and lived in Kitty Hawk for 6 years before coming to Denver to be near Marks parents. Our Mom passed away just recently and we are re-locating back to Kitty Hawk. The Outer Banks is the place which is most like the English sea-side town I was raised in and I just loved living there. I love the Beach and the amazing sea-breezes and I love the quietness of the Sound.♡.. The American people are so very friendly and have always shown this Brit so much kindness. Living in the Outer Banks is wonderful and the residents made me feel right at home. It's very peaceful place where people enjoy a completly different pace of life.♡
For the holidaymakers it has everything. The ocean, sound, great rentals, amazing choice of restaurants and of course..... shopping! Can't forget the Hilton Garden Hotel where I was married!♡♥♡ Book your vacation now and make your own judgement ♡ I'll see you there! 👀 Yvonne Marie...
