Day 3 in Hawaii - Perfect Itinerary: Markets, Canyons, Sunsets, and the Milky Way

My wife and I took multiple tours on our trip to Hawaii and this was by far the best one. We were at first disappointed to learn that we were not allowed to hike on our own into the Waipio Valley because of a rule implemented in 2022. It forced us to book this tour because it is the only way tourists are allowed to visit the valley floor. The experience was infinitely more enjoyable, educational, and rewarding than hiking on our own or visiting the scenic outlook (open to the public with free parking) would have been. Our guide, Kaleo, was raised in the valley, and is obviously very engaged with his community. Thus he was able to explain not only the history and natural phenomena, but also his own personal experience living there. He was well spoken, easy to understand, friendly, accommodating, and able to answer every single question we had. Visiting the scenic overlook on your own for free is fine if you're short on time, but taking this tour is well worth the time and expense. I left feeling humble and inspired. Also, there are wild horses.

An expensive outing but the only practical way to see Waipio Valley. Our guide Noah was outstanding and I highly recommend you ask for his shuttle.

My wife and I booked this tour after coming to the Waipio Valley Lookout in 2006 and not being able to go in to the valley. When we booked this vacation trip (2023) we made sure that we found a way to be able to go in to the valley. Booking our tour through Waipio Valley Shuttle was the only way we were going to be able to see the valley. Then while researching the tour I read that the county was doing work on the road in to the valley and that their were road closures but I booked the tour anyway hoping that this tour owner knew whether or not we would be able to complete the tour. We were not disappointed with this tour. Our tour driver, Noah (a 1/8 Hawaiin that lived in the valley for the first 25 years of his life), he knows a lot about the valley and really loves the valley, the people and sharing his knowledge and experiences in the valley. I will warn you, it rains a lot in this valley and the 21 passenger van has no windows (to permit unobstructed views of the valley) so you might want to bring rain gear. The valley has 3 waterfalls (unless it has rained a lot and then Noah said there are close to 100 waterfalls flowing in to the valley. The ride in to and out of the valley gives you many spots to take pictures along the way and you might get lucky like we did and get a beautiful rainbow pictures. Thanks, Noah and Waipio...

We visited this area in December of 2023, and I must say that it is truly something from another world. Waipiʻo Valley is a picture perfect valley located in the Hamakua District of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi and is accessible only by guided tours. Hence, our choice of Waipi'o Valley Shuttle for our excursion. Sorry for the delay in writing as I just today found your flyer with our guide's name on it. I had him sign out flyer as I wanted to make sure that I get him the best of reviews as possible as he deserved it immensely. Let me reiiterate, that this was an exceptional and magical experience. Our guide Mr. Forrest Stillman was terrific, and that is putting it lightly. His expert knowledge about the area, and its history was an added benefit of seeing this beautiful area. We cannot recommend Waipi'o Valley Shuttle enough. It is not only a method of transportation down to this secluded area, but so much more. Eating pink guavas straight from the trees at the floor of the valley next to a peaceful stream is something that we will never forget. Thank you to Mr. Stillman. You truly have the best job in the world. Justyna & Marek -...

The shuttle tour is amazing. We got there a little early, which gave us a good opportunity to visit the gift shop and look at some local crafts - all very artistic, no touristy shot glasses, postcards, etc. The proprietor was super-friendly and helpful. The real highlight of the tour was our guide, Forest. He was knowledgeable about every part of the valley, from the history to the flora and fauna. We took a tour elsewhere earlier this year that was obviously scripted. Forest was so personable and easygoing that his remarks seemed off-the-cuff, and he was receptive to questions. We did not feel like mere customers. The landscape is out of this world. Lush green hills, rivers, oceans, waterfalls. It's clear why movies are filmed around here. The steep road down into the valley is worth the price of admission alone. And the tour is really the only way for outsiders to view the valley. My teenaged son can definitely be critical, but he said this was the best tour he'd ever been on. He had plenty of questions for Forest and was very engaged throughout. As others have mentioned, this tour was one of the highlights of our trip to...
