I was a visitor today for the 1 pm celebration of Easter Mass, and unfortunately I need to provide some brutally honest feedback, but nothing that can't be improved upon in the future.
As the holiest day of the year - the biggest celebration of the church - the mass and particularly the sermon should reflect that emotion. A proper Easter celebration should inspire the congregation to out and do good in God's name.
Father John, though he seems like a lovely man, delivered a sermon entirely from a notebook. No eye contact. No movement, or engagement with the congregation. It was as solemn and meek of an Easter sermon as I have ever heard.
If the priest doesn't sound like he believes what he's saying... how is the congregation meant to believe it, let alone be inspired by it?
So my hope is that after some retrospection, future sermons can feel less like a class speech and more of an engagement with the community.
