Ā Ā Ā Read moreHaving my father operated on by cline at Jefferson hospital has been the worst experience of our lives. Cline did not understand or adequately explain in advance the risks of surgery for my 80 year old father, who was malnourished when he came to the hospital. Instead of getting my father stronger before surgery via protein/nutrient infusion, he operated on him. My father developed severe edema after surgery due to his low protein level + the trauma of surgery.
Cline did nothing to help my father after surgery, and gave up on him. When he came to my fatherās room after surgery, I asked him to wait a couple of minutes for my mother to get there. He said he ādidnāt have time to stand around.ā Cline acts sympathetic, but it now seems to just be an act. He was arrogant and rude to me and my family. He showed more concern about not being held responsible for my fatherās condition than in helping my father.
My father is now dead, 10 days after cline operated on him. He was robbed of the months that cline claimed heād get from having the surgery and time to say goodbye to his friends and family, and time to get chemo for his cancer, like cline had claimed he would. This whole experience has been an absolute nightmare.
Also, this hospital did not give us any paperwork for anything. Everything was communicated verbally and different staff gave conflicting information, so we were in a perpetual state of confusion. When we expressed our confusion, the hospital blamed us for not understanding their conflicting messages.
The whole m.o. of this hospital is to not give anything in writing because their main concern is money and not getting sued. They even went so far as to refuse to give my mother a take-out container because they were worried that she might leave it in her car and get sick eating it and sue the hospital.
Like everything else, they never even gave us a copy of the surgical consent form. My mom didnāt remember signing it for my dad, who is hard of hearing. They had my dad sign it minutes before they took him into surgery instead of giving them information ahead of time to consider.
They also should have given him information about the possibility of complications due to surgeryāespecially for someone of his age (80) and health status (severely malnourished). In addition, cline had offhandedly mentioned to my mom that my dad had alzheimerās when he did not (heās hard of hearing, which makes it difficult for him to understand sometimes). So, cline had gotten the surgical signature from an 80-year old patient that he (at the time) believed had alzheimerās disease, minutes before he was taken away for surgery.
However, cline nor anyone else at the hospital ever mentioned anything about my dadās malnourished state. They did not give him any nourishment while he was in the hospital a few days waiting for his surgery. It seems likely that they did not even assess him for this, even though (I have learned after he passed away) malnourished is a major risk factor for post-surgical complications, as with my father.
That cline mistakenly believed my dad had alzheimers yet never mentioned his malnourished state indicates that he didnāt have a good understanding of my fatherās condition before he operated on him and so could not make informed decisions about the operation (e.g., whether to remove lymph nodes like he did, which, Iāve since learned increases risk of post-operative lymphendema, particularly when the patient is malnourished and whose body is protein-depleted).
In keeping with their m.o. of withholding as much information as possible from patients and their families, my fatherās mychart information did not include any of his ct scans or any of the medications he was given throughout his stay until he died in the hospital. Also, his mychart account was deactivated within an hour of his death.
Please do not take your loved ones to this hospital. Their behaviors demonstrate that their major concern is financial liability instead...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreJefferson Hospital is one of the more lax and apathetic medical locations Iāve come across in recent years. Due to random issues stemming from a medication reaction, btw I had to diagnose that reaction, I had the āprivilegeā of going here several times over the past couple of months. In almost each case there were tech availability issues and the staff were mostly subpar in attitude, approach, ābedside mannerā, diagnostic consideration, and demeanor. For example: During one episode, after they officially discharged me, I got sick in the room and willed myself to crawl from the trash can to the speaker to call for help. The staff nurses came in, and literally just stared at me on the floor. I had to firmly tell them I needed help standing back up since I couldnāt. Apparently my position inconvenienced them and āthrew them off balanceā (according to the nurse who expressed as such to me) by getting sick though discharged. Freaking sorry that you canāt handle what youāre trained for and paid to do.
The only doctor who was genuinely worth his salt there is Dr. Sullivan. If youāre lucky enough to meet this man, just know that he does take an interest in your condition. He comforted my wife and talked with her about my symptoms when I couldnāt speak. The techs are awesome there too I might add, and are some of the best people in the world to interact with. That is the only reason this hospital gets a 2 star rating.
Very recently I went in again for a random pain that cropped up a few days ago proximate to a concern area Iāve had for a few years. Pain is still impacting me as of now despite the PAās stated OTC medicinal approach. They ādiagnosedā me without evidence or scans for something that I historically do not have with zero consideration for the concern area as a potential cause. The PA even confirmed in my presence that, based on feel, my concern point was present. Despite that empirical evidence though, I have āXā they stated. Quite literally a response I would have expected from MedExpress - which is why I went to Jefferson instead (maybe I should have pursued the latter option in hindsight).
Anyways, I had previously asked them for a reanalysis of a scan to see if that concern point was present and overlooked, and they randomly offered (without prompting actually) to look into that request while I was there - then proceeded to quote the original scan notes in MyChart instead of conducting a reanalysis. When confronted about this I was told āoh we donāt have reading radiologists here to do what youāre askingā.
Well then what the heck do you people have, and why would you offer to re-review the scan if no qualified professional is around to conduct a thorough and objective re-analysis? Between no scanning tech availability end of December, lack of foresight to conduct ultrasounds and stress tests where definitely appropriate (AHN cardiologist was astounded they didnāt pursue such screening), and no reading radiologists on hand or āavailableā, I swear that the PAās and doctors at Jefferson take sadistic delight in roadblocking you from meaningful diagnostics, discourse, and health-concern related inquiries. Or the staff are so self-focused and jaded that they either donāt care (or think youāre just stupid). If my pain does correlate to my concern point, I wonder if I can pursue Jefferson or AHN for medical negligence - especially if what I surmise is the issue has expanded.
Is this apathy a symptom of the medical community at large? Maybe. But the experiences weāve had up at UPMC are far better than any Iāve had at Jefferson (barring my interactions with Dr. S and the techs there). If you value your health and that of your loved ones, go elsewhere. We considered going here for child delivery, but after these experiences I would not trust this institution to handle either my wifeās or new childās life with the care and foresight I expect a medical...
