I took our 6-month-old Portuguese Water Dog to WWPS for a 6-day "staycay" and daycare while we went to Cancun. The following week (two weeks ago) I took him back in for a play day at Daycare.
Positives: we loved it that Shiloh could romp and play all day rather than being kept in a crate and only let out occasionally. We loved that WWPS performs social testing to screen out dogs that might be have a tendency toward aggression. It was reassuring to know that all the dogs he was playing with are up to date on their vaccines, etc. We loved not having to worry about Shiloh crying in an unfamiliar environment (knowing he would be worn out from a long day of play and would sleep). And although we didn't make a reservation early enough for Shiloh to get one of the "rooms" with the Little Tyke beds (I think) - I was so impressed with the homeyness of them.
Areas for improvement: On the days I was there signing up, dropping off and picking up, they seemed short-staffed. Being a new customer, I would have loved a little tour to see where my pup was going to spend the week. No information was volunteered as to routine, hours he'd spend inside, hours he'd spend outside, use of the pool, what type of enclosure he would sleep in, etc so I asked a few questions and received very rushed answers. It was only through my questioning that I learned that I needed to sign him up for both boarding AND daycare for him to play all day with the other dogs outside. (I would have been upset to learn that he missed out on the play because it was not explained to me). I was not told on the phone when making my reservation that I needed to bring something soft for him to sleep on so I was dismayed that he would just sleep on the floor of the crate because I didn't bring a blanket for him. I heard a customer ahead of me ask for a bath before pickup, otherwise I would not have known that was an option. I did request a bath for Shiloh. He was pretty stinky on pickup, but our plane was very delayed, so its entirely possible his bath was given earlier and he did a lot of playing between bath-time and pickup time. I was not told that there were video cameras to watch the dogs. While on vacation, I went to the website and learned that there were cam feeds but each time I looked, there was no activity on the feeds. I still don't know how those work. Do I I need a password to view the actual live feeds? Some paperwork or an explanation of what to expect and how it all worked would have been nice. On my last visit there while picking up Shiloh from his day at Doggie Daycare, I asked about the training programs. The lady's only response was to slide a brochure across the desk at me. Again, it felt very rushed and that anything that slowed down the process was somewhat unwelcome. The front desk rush or impatience ( I hate to use the word rudeness), whether rightly or wrongly, plants a seed of concern as to the staffing (or understaffing?) in the parts of the business that customers, to my knowledge, aren't privy to see. Other Considerations: Though probably unpreventable no matter how clean the facility nor how hard they try - infections are a distinct possibility when in the proximity of so many other dogs. Shiloh contracted an upper respiratory infection and kennel cough shortly after his stay at WWPR requiring an x-ray, a steroid shot and round of antibiotics (and the vet requiring a $250.00 check). Shiloh and my bank account will both recover, but for somebody on a tight budget, its one of those "unforeseens" to be aware of. I'm "downstarring" WWPS by one for the front desk staffing with a suggestion that they might consider adding a new-client/extra-services desk. We will certainly return - and Shiloh is looking forward to more romps with his...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've updated my once 5-star review to only 1-star after our most recent visit. I left my dog Darla with them for what was supposed to be a 2-day stay from Friday to Sunday. Over the phone, I made the reservation for October 29th to the 31st (with pick up on the 31st) for both boarding and Doggie Daycare. When I went to drop her off at around 7:30am on October 29th, the worker at the outside station was extremely rude and dismissive. But I wrote it off as early morning touchiness, left Darla's anti-anxiety medication, and went about my day.
All was well until my girlfriend called to check on her on Saturday. The (VERY RUDE) person on the phone bluntly informed her that Darla had been in her kennel all day Friday because, apparently, I had only said she was there for boarding. Never mind the fact that I made the reservation for boarding and daycare. It was MY fault that they couldn't read a simple reservation. Any other questions my girlfriend had were abruptly and rudely answered, as if the person on the phone were annoyed that she would deign call such a prestigious establishment. AND she hung up on my girlfriend because, apparently, she was just plain asking too many questions.
For Woodland's credit, when my girlfriend decided to just pick Darla up (it didn't make sense to leave her there if she was just going to be kenneled all day), she called to inform them and the person answering the phone that time was extremely cordial and super accommodating when we asked that Darla be washed and her nails clipped early so that we could pick her up a whole day earlier than scheduled.
When we picked Darla up, she was excited but we figured it was just missing us. THEN, when she got home, she was a totally different animal. She was aggressive to the point of trying to bite a neighbor dog. She straight bit my girlfriend twice, and my second dog Felix three times. I had to put her in her kennel to calm her down. She obviously hadn't gotten her medicine, or that kind of behavior wouldn't have happened.
Then, when I took her out later in the evening, she pooed very little and there was blood in the stool. Today, she still had blood in her stool. So not only was she kept in a kennel all day, she wasn't fed nearly enough nor given her anti-anxiety medication.
I don't know what the intake person did or noted, but Darla was wrecked by this last visit to Woodland. It's as frightening as it is ridiculous and enraging. I'm sending an email with this review attached. It's not in anyway okay. I've sent Felix and Darla (a 12 pound, 8-year old miniature Dachshund, and a 2 year old, 45 pound Lab/German Shepherd mix) here twice now. Once for three days, the second for four days.
They were wonderful both times. They were quick to answer the phone, totally willing to humor my nonsense calls just to see how my anxious Darla was doing, and treated my dogs with care. Darla is a stray, and super anxious because of that, so I'd know if she were scared of these workers. She and Felix both like them as well as you can expect.
They are also supremely professional. I left my dogs for a four day vacation while I visited my family. I requested that Felix and Darla also be placed in their Doggy Daycare program so that they could play with the other dogs while I was away. That's an extra charge that would have seen my paying ~300 dollars for the whole 4 day stay. However, Darla passed the temperament test but was skittish due to the rain and new environment. They could have easily told me they let her play with the dogs and I would have believed them, but they were honest and charged me an honest bill.
Even my old man dog Felix humors them and isn't totally angry at me when I pick him up. That should be the only stamp of approval...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFirst off, I haven't ever posted a bad review or complaint, however I am so livid at my dog, Molly's, recent stay there. The first time she stayed there, she stayed in the In/Out Run with added on extra play time. When I picked her up from to check out they didn't have the extra playtimes on there. I asked them if she didn't get them, the girl said if I asked for them then she got them. However, if it wasn't in the system then how did they know? I didn't think about it much until her LAST stay there.
This LAST stay they messed up on her reservation and Molly ended up being in a wire pop up kennel, there wasn't any In/Out Runs available. However one would be available in a couple days and they would move her. The next day I called and ask what date she would be moved and requested doggy day camp the next day, Sunday. So Sunday I check the cameras periodically throughout the day and never saw her. I called to see if she passed the temperament test because I never seen her on the cameras. The lady stated there were no notes in the computer so, "no news is good news". I wasn't sure what that meant so I stated again I never seen her on the cameras but I seen all the other dogs and she kept avoiding my original question if she even went to doggy day camp. I finally said, so you don't know if she was there or not and she stated no. With all these issues I was upset! Luckily my sister came to get her the following day. I called Woodland West to let them know and the lady said she was in doggy day camp that day and they had her signed up every day. I told them I only requested Sunday and she never went!
My sister even thought it was chaotic when she went to pick Molly up. They didn't give her the snack bag I dropped off and took 15 minutes looking for it. They saved my credit card information when I dropped Molly off and lost it.
I've never experienced vomiting or diarrhea with Molly (she is around 8 months old). However she was doing both when she was with my sister and had to go to the vet in fear of dehydration. Thankfully, the vet gave her a shot and antibiotics. I don't believe this just started at my sisters, neither did the vet. He stated, it more than likely started at the boarding place and they should had informed us at check out. Never happened.
This place is very disorganized!! I will never take Molly there again. I wouldn't ignore these bad reviews. Do your research and check elsewhere! I would give ZERO stars if I could.
Sorry if this seems harsh, however when it comes to your pets, you should be confident in the place they are being boarded at. I hope the owner sees this and looks into improvements for...
