There is a very toxic vibe at this store, almost a bully mentality. Not necessarily from the patrons, but from the staff. There is one particular gentleman who always has a massive chip on his shoulder. He will laugh at customers when something doesn't work out for them. He will be smug when you pick up and singles you've ordered. He has laughed in my face in a derogatory manner on multiple occasions. The problem is that this particular individual...is the OWNER. Straight up bully behavior, just look at some of his responses here on Google Reviews.
Most of the other staff and most of the players are great (which is the only thing giving this place 2 stars over 1). I've had some great times there over the years, but I also don't like the anxiety of entering an establishment and worrying if the owner is gonna be in "one of his moods"
There are plenty of other game stores in the greater Kansas City area, pick ANY of the other ones to go to and spend your money there.
Edit: Yes, Spanky went out of his way to send me an unsolicited, unprompted direct message over Facebook. I consider this behavior quite inappropriate and representative of how this toxic behavior manifests. Spanky responded with the usual response he makes to every complaint about his behavior "Can you be more specific?" THIS IS A MANIPULATION TACTIC. If I say specifics, Spanky can say "I don't recall" or "I'll look into it" yet nothing changes. If I don't recall specifics, he just brushes off the complaint. My recommendation for your business, Mr. Spanky, would be for you to become a silent owner until you can figure out your attitude issues. I know MULTIPLE people feel the same way, even if you haven't received a complaint about it. Let me make something perfectly clear, I want this place to be great. I want Spanky's to be a staple in our community, but as for how things are now, I cannot in good faith recommend ANY player or customer to your store. Your store and this community both...
Read moreWent in shop today looking to get help with some newer cards I received in a trade. Also WAS going to look at the Pokémon selection my brother RAVED about. Everything was going smoothly until I said I didn’t want to sell, immediately my cards are “fake” and low value, clearly I understand not every card is worth big bucks but coming to a card shop you’d assume they would have general knowledge. What really ticked me off was removing a card from the binder and bending it. Even slightly then pointing to ONE card as being fake (not the one that was taken from binder and bent) anywho I ask about grading because looking up a couple of these cards I’ve noticed PSA 9-10 grading fetching 6-$1200 all recent SOLD eBay listings. Was told nope not worth it that’s $200 to grade. Needless to say I won’t be returning to purchase any cards. Which is sad because they have a decent selection of old school Pokémon cards. Just feel like because I didn’t want to sell I was treated like I was bothering said employee, instead of being seen as a...
Read moreI’ve been using Spanky’s ever since I got into Magic: The Gathering about a year ago. Their website is always very reflective of what they have in store, even if it’s a $.10 card. Ordering online is easy, the store has a huge selection of cards, boxes, mats, dice, pokemon, and anything else you could think of! I’ve been meaning to write my review for a while, but today I placed an online order for about 240 cards (!!) and went to the store today for the pickup. I totally forgot that the Phyrexia release was the same day. When I got there they weren’t able to fill my order but were very nice about it. The guy at the counter (sorry I didn’t catch your name) made it a clear point that they wanted to accommodate ME! We got my order setup to ship whenever they got it filled, which I’m sure isn’t a fun task to deal with during a set release.
Long winded, but this store is clean, awesome, and cares about its audience. I highly recommend them and plan to use Spanky’s Card Shop for all my Magic needs for...
