Shields Meats & Produce Inc. — Local services in Kennebunk

If anyone is thinking about shopping at Shields Meats and Produce I’d highly suggest going elsewhere.

Not only does most the day shift drink all day out back or in the office (my fiancé would clean up after them when he would go in) but they smoke cigarettes outback where and while food is being prepped and cut. That seems like a health hazard. It’s weird though, because the place somehow doesn’t reap of cigarettes like you’d imagine.

During his time working there, he can confirm nothing is sanitary, nor do they wear gloves or clean their hands before touching the food they not only sell, but send out to local restaurants in the area. He of course didn’t partake in that, but he saw it first hand. I can’t speak for when the retail shop is open during the day, I’m sure they clean their act up enough in front of customers, who wouldn’t? But this stuff is happening outback, regularly.

They are also known for leaving meats out for hours on end uncovered, or covering very badly and just shoving in the fridge until needed later, and still sending it out for consumption to local restaurants you’ve probably ate at.

I’ve seen photos of slaughtered animals hanging up in the PRODUCE room, and idk anything about being vegan, or much about cross contamination but I’d believe that crosses a line.

Anyone is free to make their own choices or disagree but this is the stuff happening behind the scenes and things I also witnessed myself when i was there after the shop closed for the evening and was open to...

I have purchased meat and poultry from these folks for more than 20 years.until recently, we have only had one bad experience with a purchase. However, during a recent visit, I purchased four tenderloin and four chicken breasts.

The steak was full of fat running through it, the chicken was so tough, even I gave up eating it! I never do that! The chicken was tough, hard to eat, with little flavor. Shield meat is the best in the area. I go often, so I am recognized and treated well. When I first started buying meat there I felt uncomfortable and felt like an outsider. I got average service. Now Shields treats me well. They do stand behind what they sell. I often ask them to cut or grind to order and they're happy to accommodate. I can't find better...
