As the only movie theater in Kirksville (let alone a minimum of 30 miles in one direction, and much further in others), it's easy to see how Downtown Cinema 8 could allow things to slide. That being said, it is now bordering on being unusable.
Here are just some of many complaints:
Website is ugly to the point of being difficult to read.
Parking lot is tiny and difficult to back out of most spaces. (I understand this is a restriction of the lot)
No online ticket sales so you never know if a movie is sold out until you get there. (Yes, I understand people did that for decades, but the technology exists now.)
Ticket sales are now done from the concession cash registers so you have no choice but to wait in line behind people trying to decide what candy they want or waiting on their popcorn.
Concession selection is tiny.
(Specific to Christmas time) Lobby is filled with so many yard sized Christmas decorations as to make it difficult to navigate if there is even a slight crowd.
Seats in the theaters are showing definite age. In the past two weeks I have encountered a seat so broken I almost sank to the floor - a seat with the majority of the left arm rest torn off - a seat that the padding was all but gone and left arm was taped down to hold it in place.
I understand we're a small town, but this just isn't even funny any more. As one of the few sources of entertainment in Kirksville it does actually represent us to a degree to people pondering moving here, going to school at our universities or potentially moving a business to our city.
The movie going experience has gotten to the point at Downtown Cinema 8 that I usually wait until I am out of town to see a film, or if I have no scheduled trips I most often wait for the home video release. Watching movies at home is not my preference, but DC8 has pretty much driven me to that in most cases.
Kirksville deserves better, or at least a business that seems to care about how it...
Read moreTook my son recently and he had a great experience, except for the bathroom stall that was totally out of TP and the other 3 he passed up with unflushed toilets...Also would be cool if the viewing rooms were cleaned with the lights on or at least mopped if they're not, seats were dirtier than I remember even on the backs where it looked like soda had been splattered all over. The whole room felt "sticky" in general like a Chuck E. Cheese. But, the young guys running the counters were super friendly and patient with my 7 year old who also spilled his fair share of popcorn on the floor 3 times, ran laps around the theater room and switched seats 3 times. Granted, we were the only two in there at 7pm to see Migration on a weekend. He also got a large slushie ($5) at the ticket counter awhile before the movie started and it lasted him until the movie ended. I decided to get one for the first time ever because I'm not a slushie connoisseur since his was strawberry and not as sickeningly sweet as I thought it would be so off I went about 30-40 minutes into the movie to get my own. The smiling young man behind the counter informed me that they had just refilled the machine so it wasn't super icy or thickened up yet which I could see as he showed me the machine. He dispensed a small amount into a cup to ask if the consistency was ok or if I wanted to come back after it had a chance to get "slushier" which I really appreciated considering what you pay for what I would assume is a medium sized cup even though it lasts forever. He also asked if I wanted my receipt which always feels silly to ask for when it's not offered but I scan mine on several apps for reward points so bonus there that he didn't make me...
Read moreBack in its heyday it was a great theater BUT over time this place has been spiraling down, which sucks considering its the only theater in town. Seats are torn up and not maintained, no posters advertising in front of theater screening room, white screen were movie projects too are old and sometimes have markings on them and hold onto select view films for months on end when they are out on blu ray.. it just doesn't make any since to do so. What really was nail in coffin for me tho was tonight showing of scream 6. Aprently there are new policy at theater about r rated films and that even if you are accompanied by a parent you are not allowed in to film which is ridiculous or if you buy a ticket in advance for r rated film you are not allowed to leave do to them thinking you will sneak underage kids in. It was so strict that two people mistakenly went into wrong film and they stopped movie just to drag them out when they thaught it was creed 3 (movie was in previews still hadn't started yet.) I'm just saying i understand this is a family business and with digital steaming and covid i imagine it hit them hard BUTthat if you had the posters out front they could of prevented that. Alot of other small things can fix alot of these bigger things and being strict like this to people isn't going to help it going to hurt business more. I hope the theater can turn itself around because I do love to support...
