I am an American black woman and visited the Dominican Republic on a cruise and forgot to bring proper hair care products for the heat, because it was winter from the state I left. The port stores only carried products for Caucasian women that I knew wouldn't work on my hair. Finally, at a port booth vendor, I found a hair care product that was made from chocolate that was my roommate and I's salvation. However, it was seized at the airport for being too big to carry on the plane. Determined to relocate the product in the states, I overheard a black woman speaking in Spanish at Walmart and asked her in my halting Spanish if she had ever heard of the product. She had and recommended this grocery store. I ended up paying for 2 products in the line about the same as I paid for the one product I bought in the DR! The daughter of the owner is very bilingual, which is great for non-Spanish speaking customers. What's cool is that I still have the shampoo (the conditioner was well used and is long gone), both as a reminder of my DR trip and of this grocery store.
UPDATE: I no longer live in the area, but now that I know what they carry, I will make a visit when...
Read moreI’ve been in the area since I was a kid. This store changed the moment it switched owners. It convenient because it has Authentic Dominican products. But the owner is pretty annoying. She wants to force sales onto you that you don’t want to buy. One day I was on my Way home to cook and stopped by to grab “1” empanada. She kept pushing and pushing I went from “1” to “3” to “6” and ended up giving me the ones I didn’t want. I respect the hustle but there’s a limit. She makes rude comments and tries testing people’s intelligence. Has 0 respect for other people’s cultures. I’ve had a few uncomfortable situations with her so I avoid stopping by as much as I possibly can.
The other problem is pricing.and these reviews confirmed my doubts. She sent me the receipt one time and it said custom item on a bunch of transactions. Go with thick skin and ready to negotiate. Homegirl thinks she’s in NY lol!
Response: Anyone reading these reviews, read the responses! Confirms how rude owners are. And to the owner, must suck to not have control...
Read moreI’ve been to this place a couple of times I moved to GA from NJ and when I’m missing Dominican products for something this is the only place that google recommends for me. Every single time I go in there the employees have to mention how “I don’t look Dominican” “don’t sound Dominican” “don’t look as if I speak Spanish” I go in there to buy something and get out not once have I ever asked for their opinion on how I look and specifically to be talked about as if im not standing right there clearly speaking Spanish to them! So rude. And secondly I don’t understand how nothing has the prices on them? I go in there and spend a different amount of money every time no idea how, and no point on asking the employees for princes because one lady just told me “idk they’ll tell you at the register” so ridiculous. If anyone has another recommendation for a Dominican spot to get some groceries at please...
