I have never written a review on a product or service I received, but not warning prospective students of this college would be a disservice to them. Firstly, any class taken strictly through NLC is unaccredited, and will be deemed invalid by any out of state college. Secondly, the advising staff has committed serious mishaps, when in my group advising session on the day of my New Student Orientation, I was told to take a SAC@NLC Composition 1 course with a joint online "English Lab". I scored at 1850 on my SATs and was then SUPPOSED to be exempt from any basic courses with an online lab, which was final straw for me because this class for me proved to be a nightmare. Taught by Dr. Karen Tanguma, this class was meant to be for ESL students, with the online English lab to aid in learning basic English and grammar rules. This course was my biggest nag and headache of the year, as someone who NEVER should've taken such a course especially given my high SATs, I didnt find out until two months later when I changed my major and had a one on one advising session that I should have taken an advanced Comp 1 course without the online lab. The lab software was faulty, as the minimum amount of hours completed in the course was 16, some students stayed long in overnight and "completed" the hours within one week; while two other students and my account only had two hours logged in after 8 weeks in the class, no absences and actually completing work, I was told there was nothing to be done. Dr. Tanguma herself had the most drops in her class I had ever experienced, the due dates were constantly changing, and I had a full-time job nd would spend any extra time completing assignments, only to come in to find the ESL students needed more time and the due date changed. I had jury duty on a day I was meant to do a presentation, and even with proof of the summons she counted it as late. She let students text directly in front of her, and verbatim called select students her favorites to the whole class, and allowed them to constantly come in late with the promise that it would not be counted. The class day after I had jury duty I had to make an emergent car repair, and during those two missed classes, the final she promised would be online was announced as in class. I missed the final, asked when the change was announced, to which she said "it had always been that way", and had my brother who had a later class with her text me to tell me that I could take it on a Monday. Later that same day she emailed me to say I would have to take it immediately that next day, in order to pass, I worked until midnight that day and went in the next dy at 6AM, and did not check the email. My final standing grade in the class is a 66%, which will stay on my transcript for every actual college and eventual med school I apply to will see, and I will now have to re-take Comp 1. I am done with this school and the unprofessionalism of the Alamo College system, a close friend of mine was also advised wrongly at SAC and graduated a semester late, because he had to re-take a class he was told he didn't need. My advice would either to be one of the lucky ones, or stay away completely away. I wasted four months and $400 on the Comp 1/English Lab course I ultimately failed and was never...
Read moreThe admission, advising, financial aid department and the enrollment process are very terrible. I can not believe there is still a arbitrary negligent college like NLC. --------------
They have my Texasapply application, FASA confirmed NLC is my current school, 4 years continuously transcript from Austin Community College (I need to take English as second language courses, and had to request ACC sent it two times because NCL said they didn't get the transcript,) 10 years green card, TX driver license with same address in application, verify form that NLC is my home school for FA, but they still put me as OUT OF STATE. Administrator asked me if I have own property in Bexas county. I said no, I live in Austin and I am going to move to San Antonio next month. She said because I filled out in TexasApply I don't work so I have no evidence that I am a Texas resident (???). I said I work part-time, TexasApply only asked if I work full time. She said that's no matter. If I work part-time, I can get a verify letter to confirm and she will change my status to be out of district. An adviser after talked with administrator confirmed that my transcript doesn't show I am a Texas resident because I could be an international student. Is that make sense when they asked me two times in two places to copy my 10 year green card? Any international student can have a 10 year green card? Only the US permanent resident have it. Why do I need a sign from where I work to be a Texas resident? 4 years in Austin community college is not value as a sign of someone? Why does my sign in Texasapply about my current address not have credit than someone's sign to confirm I live there? I feel my right was insulted. My officially papers and my application with my sign have no value as a sign of someone else. ------------------------
They also status that I can not have FA in NLC because my NLC is not my home school. I still be held by something that I didn't understand what are they. When I called, they explained I need to call to advising, that show I need some advising courses because I am a freshman student. But I done more than 30 credit hours in ACC not include ESOL credits! Their site said only under 15 credits transfer student need to take them. ------------------------
There are a lot of issues than that. They asked me to follow what I need to do for enrollment by NLC emails even in my application I filled out my primary email. It is ironic because student can not read emails when they are not approved to be a enrollment student. I need to call many times to follow up my process and figured it out. At Austin Community College, I only need one day to finish enrollment with a clear helpful system. ---------------------
After a month tried to enroll this school but only had more troubles, I quit because I don't think I should to join in the school that should only operated in the 1960s in places not encourage education, doesn't respect student. What do I hope to learn in a college with that level system? Too many issues that were created were ridiculous and...
Read moreI'll try to keep this as short as possible but I want to share my experience. I was told I needed to attend a group orientation before I could speak with an advisor so I did. The group orientation was basically a group registration. For some students that might be fine but for those of us who had questions and wanted to speak with an advisor about a degree plan, this was not helpful. I was not going to sign up for a class unless I was sure I needed it. A few students including myself got up and left since we didn't feel the need to register first. The next day during walk in hours, I asked to speak with an advisor. The guy at the front desk asked if I attended orientation. I said yes but I didn't register because I want to speak with advisor first. He replied well that's what orientation is for. I said there wasn't an advisor at orientation to help me with the questions I have. He said ok fine I can let you speak with an advisor but they are just going to put you in front of a computer and tell you to register. Although I was annoyed with my experience so far, I was excited to actually talk to someone who could answer my questions. That excitement was short lived. When I was called to the back, it was the same person who ran the orientation and the first question she asked was weren't you in my orientation. I said yes. She asked well why didn't you register. I said because I had questions and wanted to speak with someone one on one before I sign up for a class. I'll spare you the rest of the conversation because this is already too long of a review but she was not very helpful and gave the impression that she had better things to be doing and even had another staff member standing by the doorway waiting to talk to her the whole time I was there. It's bad enough that they don't look at you when they talk to you and speak in a condescending monotone voice but it's even worse that they don't even try to hide the fact that they are just there for a paycheck. I did not attend the college and would not recommend it. Maybe I'm spoiled from my last college for being professional and caring. I hope not all Alamo colleges are like this. I really am looking forward to going...
